MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–issue three–pg 2(of 16)

pg 2

pg 2

  …To Be Continued…

Flemings parents are fun to draw and write for, but after my realization about what a subliminal rip-off issue three is of LAST CRUSADE, I don’t know that I’ll bring them back in any large capacity again(though both their deaths are shown/referenced in MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #6, which is in production right now). But we’ll see. It’s always fun writing vengeful, hate-filled bickering. A FUN FACT about Phineus and Elanore Hazmat:  They are based on cloth cut-outs of “old-timey” people who at some point were made and glued to plates. These plates eventually fell out of favor with whoever made them(or the person they were gifted to) and found their way into the Unique Thrift Store(2201 37th Ave NE, Minneapolis, MN55421), and from there into my wife’s hands. “Phineus” and “Elanore” now rest comfortably on a classy old rack and hang in my dining room.

REMINDER:     ZINEFEST(http://zinefest.org) is this weekend (sat 11-5, sun 11-4). I’ll be there, along with many of my comic-making friends(DANIEL J OLSON, RYAN DOW, MIKE TOFT, SARAH MOREAN, and MORE!!!). For more on Zinefest click on either the above link, or see my post from Sunday about it. Hope to see you there.

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–issue three–cover and pg 1(of 16), also: “introspection”

MT#3-cover

pg 1

pg 1

   …To Be Continued…

Welcome to MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE issue three! Which, if you’re counting, is actually the fifth MANLY TALES adventure. IF asked to describe what issue three is about, I would say:

It’s about Fathers and Sons, How Our Past Events Form Our Future Selves And Actions, and The Quest For The Holy Grail.

Now if you were to read that and think: “Oh, so you’re just going to rip-off INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE for this issue?” you would probably be right—PROBABLY!  The fact is I wrote, pencilled, lettered, and inked almost all of issue three before I realized that myself.  When I finally did, lemme tell ya I felt pretty dumb. So there was only one way to handle the situation: I totally paid homage to my unintentional homage with an homage cover!

But to be fair(to myself anyway) there is a lot more to issue three than the above description, and a lot more to these characters than simple action-hero/film parodies (as this and future–and hopefully past–issues show).  So sit back and enjoy the next 16 days, and hopefully you’ll see that for yourself.

***ALSO:  After last Thursdays Cartoonist Conspiracy jam, we went out drinking and some of us got a little “introspective” and paid homage(theres that word again) to RYAN www.introspectivecomics.com DOWs fine online comic. Check out our effort at: http://ryandow.com/ic/2009/07/03/bonus-comic-intospective-jam-comic/

***ALSO ALSO: ZINEFEST (http://zinefest.org) is this weekend (ttp://staplegenius.wordpress.com/2009/07/05/misc-zinefest-is-this-weekendjuly-11th-and-12th/) and I hope to see you there.
