SUPERMARKET VIGILANTE: WALKABOUT by Erik Nelson and Dank

Here is a short I did with ERIK NELSON a few years back. He wrote it and penciled it, and I lettered and inked it. Then we did the reverse for the cover. I so wanted to include this in the SUPERMARKET VIGILANTE trade, but I concluded it was just too strange…but in an awesome way!!! Just not a way that fit into the trade story.  Anyway, enjoy some 70’s-style Kirby-esque madness…

“SUPERMARKET VIGILANTE: WALKABOUT” by Nelson and Klonowski

This here is a crazy, fun, and unique story I did with ERIK NELSON back in 2010.  When I recently put together the SUPERMARKET VIGILANTE book (which features four older SMV tales inter-woven in an all-new 50 page story) I could not for the life of me figure out how to work it in as well.  Its just…its just so awesomely weird in context to the rest of the book .  Anyway, it was written and drawn by Erik and inked by me (except the cover and the intro page that I drew and Erik inked. We needed the intro page so it was 8 pages and we could make a mini).   This story is some of the most fun I’ve had inking someone elses work and I really hope once Erik’s life calms down (he recently became a proud papa!) we can do something again.  Thanks, Erik!

Some love from Bud Burgy, the Lutefisk Sushi podcast makes the world smile, and 24 Hour Comic Day is Saturday, Oct 1st!

**The above image is not by me, but rather by collaborator BUD BURGY (who last week did a lovely write-up of my forth-coming SUPERMARKET VIGILANTE book) A keen-eyed observer may notice one FLEMING HAZMAT tucked away in the image.  Not only that, but the band NATIONAL BIRD features one Casey “NELS” Nelson –a name you may recognize as one of the original “STAPLEGENIUS FOUR” and also the co-creator of CONTINUITY GUY (the comic Bud and I now do together. Ciiiiiiiiiiircle of Life!).  FYI Nels– As the Assy Neckman as my witness, you WILL have a book of your recently unearthed comics in the next LUTEFISK SUSHI!!!  Speaking of Lutefisk Sushi…

**The LUTEFISK SUSHI PODCAST was a modest hit, and I couldn’t be happier!  Look for episode this Thursday (on the website or subscribe on itunes).

**Finally, 24 HOUR COMIC DAY is this Saturday, October 1st. If you live in Minnesota be sure to join the Cartoonist Conspiracy for the 8th year of 24 hour cartooning!  This is the first year I WON’T be participating fully in the event, but I’ll certainly be there for a while to draw and support those doing the 24 Hour dare!  Hope to see you there!

Shameless staplegenius self-promotion…sorry

Hey, everybody!  So as I mentioned last time I have some new books that will be debuting at MIX–the MINNEAPOLIS INDIE XPO–this November 5th and 6th.   These books are however AVAILABLE RIGHT NOW via the old internet!  So, if you can’t wait 2 months why not get out your credit card and do some orderin’?  Lets have a look at whats offered, shall we?

All 304 pages of MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE in one lovely square-bound edition–every story, every issue, every special, a slew of pin-ups by my cartooning friends and idols, and a blush-inducing introduction by ZANDER CANNON!

The complete SUPERMARKET VIGILANTE collection! An all-new 52 page adventure wraps snugly around the three SMV tales originally seen in the MUSCLES AND FIGHTS anthology series, as well as 2009’s 24 Hour Comic.   In addition to those debuts there will also be some other 2011 releases on-hand, including:

Written by me and drawn by BUD BURGY–The second thrilling, time-twisting adventure of CONTINUITY GUY!  Will he man-up and embrace his destiny, or will the past come to defeat him first? Will it even matter that book one is totally unavailable for purchase? …Nah  But what is available for purchase is Bud’s MEATFIST AND GRONK collection–which features several pin-ups by me as well as a Meatfist&Gronk/Continuity Guy sort story written by me and drawn once again by the steady hand of Bud Burgy!

This year I also did some short work for a few anthologies that will be available/debuting at MIX (or at least should be…).  First up is DUH!, a Kurtzman-era Mad Magazine inspired humor book written by Bill Prendergast and drawn by myself, Carlos Merino, James Powell, Dan Murphy, and Lupi McGinty.  Speaking of Lupi, her GERM WARFARE collection will be (I think) debuting at MIX.  More information and helpful links will be posted as those become available.

Ok…sorry about all that shilling.  I’ll be back Wednesday with some actual art.  Promise.

the final “lost” guest artist pin-ups: Jon Sloan

Here’s the final “lost” guest artisrt pin-up, and it’s not even a MANLY TALES, it’s  a SUPERMARKET VIGILANTE pin-up JON SLOAN did back in the MUSCLES AND FIGHTS days.  I should probably take this opportunity to note that there should be a SUPERMARKET VIGILANTE collection done and out by MIX that will feature all of SMVs previous appearances PLUS an all-new 50 page story.  So watch for that–it’s going to be pretty great!   In the meantime, I’ll throw it back to Jon and present a pin-up I did of his characters right about the same time he did the above.  Thanks again, Jon!

‘Supermarket Vigilante’

While I always have a lot of projects in various stages of development (like the script for MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #9 I need to finish and then draw, or the script for a new TOMMY CHICAGO special that Brian Bastian has written and that I also need to draw), the thing demanding all my attention for the last month has been an all-new SUPERMARKET VIGILANTE adventure.  It clocks in at 52 pages and will serve as a new story for a SMV collection I will have out later this year.  The collection will feature the new yarn, the three ‘MUSCLES AND FIGHTS’ adventures, and the SMV 24 Hour Comic I did in 2009.  It’s been a crazy fun story to work on and I can’t wait to show it to you all.
