PLUNGER-MAN–by Ryan Dow and myself–pg 7(of 11), Also: i-con drawings and ‘CONTINUITY GUY’

pg 7

This story is written, pencilled and greytoned by RYAN DOW, and inked and lettered by myself.  It first appeared in MUSCLES AND FRIGHTS.  No some thoughts on todays page…

RYAN DOW:  I was really struggling to come up with a ridiculous boast for Jabbagazule, like, “I am older than atoms!  More powerful than the Sun!”  It popped in my head while shopping at Goodwill.  “Older than God (which became Yaweh)!  More powerful than Jesus!”  Awesome!

DANNO KLONOWSKI:  Yaweh is my favorite silly name for the Judeo-Christian God.  Glad you changed it.

Also:  The plot is really thickening over at CONTINUITY GUY.  Check our BUD‘s amazing art for this weeks page.

Finally, as you may know I went to the I-CON comic convention in Iowa over the weekend.  It was a bust in about every way imaginable.  The only few exceptions being spending lots of times with dear friends, and the great drawings that came out it.  Here’s a couple…

So if RYAN DOW, DANIEL J OLSON, KEVIN CANNON, and myself took over the chores on Marvel’s “AVENGERS” it would look something like that.  Scoff if you must, but one kid saw that drawing and asked if he could buy from us the issue that this drawing is the cover for.

Also, remember when I mentioned CONTINUITY GUY a paragraph or so ago?  Well, one of the things Bud and I want to include in the print edition (due April 2010) is a little back-up feature that lets you in on all the stuff that came before the CONTINUITY GUY graphic novella, specifically info on the IT’S WAR series.  The only real catch here is that I never finished the IT’S WAR series, so I’m going to have to create some original artwork.  Here’ s something I did at I-CON I’ll probably include in that:

Ok, one more.  Remember good old DOC HEADULON from “PHENOMENAL TANGENTS“?  Well one of the few things I sold at I-CON was a copy of ‘TANGENTS’ to a savvy reader who from the cover alone got that it was a Jack Kirby-esque book.  Once I showed him ‘TANGENTS’ nifty fold-out feature he was, in his own words, “SOLD!”  This got me thinking about Doc.  Then I noticed I was surrounded by Kirby covers.  Now I have a seed of an idea for a follow-up story.  So, enjoy this possible sneak-peek (STEVE…we need to talk):

That enough for you?  Well, that’s not all!  For I dare say the best is yet to come, as that fellow I-CON survivor KEVIN CANNON did some pretty amazing MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE drawings.  Sadly, I don’t have those to share right now.  But hopefully there will be up either here or over at the BIG TIME ATTIC blog sometime later this week.  Keep your eyes peeled, and I’ll see you tomorrow.

*** BTW: just cause you’re getting the PLUNGER-MAN milk for free, you should still totally buy the MUSCLES AND FRIGHTS cow.  It’s full of a ton of great stuff from some wonderful creators.  But…you don’t have to take my word for it.

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–GUEST ARTIST SPECTACULAR–pg 2(of 14)–by Earl Luckes and Brian Bastian, also: “phenomenal tangets” goes “kirby-vision”

pg 2: art--Earl Luckes, words: Brian Bastian

pg 2: art--Earl Luckes, words: Brian Bastian

About the kick-ass creators of this page:

BRIAN BASTIAN writes stuff.  He may have even written this.  Who is to say?

EARL LUCKES is a man on a mission, and if this lover of comics and 70’s culture had a theme song, it would certainly be THIS one (thanks Mark and Jerzy)!  Earl burst into comics like no sane person should–by challenging himself to do a 24 HOUR COMIC!  After that Earl became a Conspiracy semi-regular and contributed some might fine work to anthologies like ALLEY CATSUPER FANTASTICA COMIX, BIG FUNNY, and the MUSCLES AND FIGHTSempire.  Earl’s stuff is raw, and tough, and hellz fun–just like the 1970’s hero-ethic he tries to capture in his work–and I am honored he did this page.  OH YEAH!!!–and Earl makes short-films that take modern cinema schlock-meisters like Michael Bay and Steven Sommers to task for their bastardization of the medium.  Quite a talent.  Best of all, Earl assures me his very own webcomic is in the works, and I for one cannot wait!

Also,  “PHENOMENAL TANGENTS“, the Kirby-inspired comic I did with Steven Stwalley, has been added to “KIRBY-VISION“, the Kirby Museum’s Blog tracking “THE KING’s” continuing influence.  Sweet!

And one last parting shot–today’s guest artist EARL LUCKES fancies himself a Fleming Hazmat type…

PHENOMENAL TANGENTS–back cover by STEVEN STWALLEY, also: another MPLS Conspiracy member set loose in the wild…

"GOLDEN AGE HEADULON" by Golden Age Steven Stwalley (www.stwallskull.com)

"GOLDEN AGE HEADULON" by Golden Age Steven Stwalley (www.stwallskull.com)

In addition to writing the coolest script in the world and shaming me with his lettering,  STEVE STWALLEY schooled the world with this back cover.  STEVE fathered the INTERNATIONAL CARTOONIST CONSPIRACY in 1954 with 12 women of illicit intent, and is one of the worlds nicest dads.
Speaking of the CONSPIRACY…Visiting MPLS CELL Conspirator Ameritus ATHENA CURRIER has left Minneapolis after summering again with this fine institution to lecture sequentially for a couple of semisters at Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass.  Her latest strip is PT 1 of her SUMMER here and features the Spawn of Stwalley themselves. Her September 2nd, 2009 strip was a submission she totally should sent in to the CITY PAGES COMIX ISSUE 2009, and then they could have bumped that whiney BS I did.  See you soon, Professor!
Oh yeah…24 HOUR COMIC DAY is like less than a month away…umm…sign up here or just show up the 3rd of OCTOBER at MN CENTER FOR THE BOOK ARTS from 10am until 10am on the 4th(or until you finish–whichever comes first!) .  Theres a delicious (but filthy, godless, and communist) food/beverage POT LUCK and live blogging for the kids!

PHENOMENAL TANGENTS–pg 26 of 26!!! Also: Why the Minneapolis comic scene rocks, and I’m going on “vacation”

pg 26--THE END!

pg 26--THE END!

There it is!  THE END!!!  STEVE even managed to tie it back to page one at the end there. Despite an unnecessarily protracted snails pace to finish, PHENOMENAL TANGENTS is one of my favorite books to have done.  Working with Steve was a blast and I hope to do it again someday soon.  We set out to accomplish a goal of doing an awesome 1970’s Kirby inspired book and I think we knocked it out of the back issue bin! Yay fun!

ALSO:  SARAH MOREAN wrote a great article on how and why the Minneapolis comic scene is alive, well, and growing.  Theres even a picture of me in it…though I don’t actually see that as a plus… And once global warming eliminates winter once and for all, Minneapolis will be prefect (though it’ll be run entirely by Morlocks…or Norm Coleman. Same difference.).

SO… what’s next—? Well tomorrow you get STEVE’s awesome PHENOMENAL TANGENTS back cover, and then after Labor Day when all the kids go back to school and all the adults go back to work–I”M TAKING A VACATION!

…But this is a webcomic, so a “vacation” means I’ve convinced several of my FRIENDS to write and draw a 14 page MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE comic which will be debuting on here on the web!

It is called “THE 12 TRIALS OF FLEMING HAZMAT–a MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE GUEST ARTIST SPECTACULAR” and it most certainly is that!

The whole thing is written by BRIAN BASTIAN and will feature art by BUD BURGYKEVIN CANNON, ZANDER CANNON, RYAN DOW, DEAN FRASERJESSE GILLESPIE,  BRITT HAMMERBERG, BOB LIPSKIEARL LUCKES, LUPI MCGINTY, DAN MURPHY, ERIK NELSONDANIEL J OLSON, DAVID STEINLICHT,  and MIKE TOFT !!!

Enjoy your family or whatever it is people do over Labor Day and then be back here Tuesday…’cause THE GUEST ARTIST SPECTACULAR begins!!!

PHENOMENAL TANGENTS–pg 25(of 26), also: David Lloyd randomly stops by…

pg 25

pg 25

Ok, so I had originally planned to write a thing about the death of the MINICOMICS DUMP TRUCK here, but then last night this happened:

100_2869

DAVID LLOYD, best known as the artist for the ground-breaking graphic novel V FOR VENDETTA, randomly showed up for the monthly Minneapolis meeting of the INTERNATIONAL CARTOONIST CONSPIRACY.  What happened was David ended up having nearly a full day lay-over while waiting for the next flight to Iceland.  With nothing better to do here in Mpls/St Paul he checked his Facebook “friends” and mine was the first name that popped up.  He checked out my profile, saw I was into comics, and sent me a message both via Facebook and my email that he was here and wondering if I would like to meet and chat.

100_2889

MEANWHILE…I open my email, see David’s messages, and am convinced I am being targeted by the worlds most specific SPAM robot.  But figuring “What the Hell” I write back that the CONSPIRACY meeting is going on at DIAMONDS COFFEE SHOP and should this message be a attached to a real person that he should stop by.  He didn’t write back. I told a few Conspirators about this and all assumed it to be random, weird spam…or a stalker stealing Mr Lloyds identity…or something.  Either way it was dropped, and we went about our business.  Then about an hour into the jam comic meeting…

100_2864

So David hung out, talked with us,  checked out KEVIN AND ZANDER CANNON’s BIG TIME ATTIC studio, chatted it up with SARAH MOREAN and MATT KRISKE, and then….and then I don’t know what, cause I had go put the kids to bed and pick up my wife from school.  But after I picked her up we met up with some of the group–where did everyone else go?!– at THE YACHT CLUB BAR, and I had the foresight to bring my camera this time.

PHENOMENAL TANGENTS–pg 23/24 (of 26)

pgs 23/24

pgs 23/24

I know some kind of discussion occured between STEVE and I about why these pages ended up the way they did.  In the printed version they come out together on an 8.5×11″ fold-out.  On all the other pages that fold like this, they are numbered as single pages (#’s 2,5,8,11,etc…) but for some reason I numbered this as two seperate pages.  I wanna say the issues original script was 24 pages and I realized we could stretch the page count to allow STEVE more room to add-in the awesome by using the inside back cover.  I also think this may have only been written as one page(23), but for some reason I thumbnailed it out I decided to draw it on two sepearte peices of 11×17″ paper when I drew it, instead of one (like #’s 2,5,8,11…).  This somehow abstractly turned into being named pages 23/24  in my mind.  I think I even tried to explain to STEVE why this was necessary.  He politely nodded and said “sure!”  But at this point in history, the WHY is lost on me.

pg 22

pg 22

YES! RAPTIMAMMEL IS BACK!…AGAIN!!!  STEVE sure knocked it out of the park when he created ol’ Repti!

ALSO:  This happened.  Very excited.  Many thanks to nearly 40 MN cartoonists(past and present) who already plan on contributing to LSD!!!    More to come on this from me over the next 11 months, I’m sure.  Stay tuned.
