NEWS: SPRINGCON! LIVE LUTEFISK SUSHI PODCAST! NEW BOOKS!

From the SPRINGCON flyer they made special for MIX…

Ahoy! Welcome to an update. I assure you I’m working on stuff which I may or may not start posting here, but rest assured there will be…something. For now though… THINGS OF NOTE!!!

SPRINGCON 2012 SAT MAY 19 & SUN MAY 20, 10-5

Once again I’ll be at Springcon. I’m excited this year to not only debut a couple new books, but I’ll also be recording a live LUTEFISK SUSHI PODCAST!  The special live guests include 2-D CLOUD, BRAD McGINTY, and ZANDER CANNON. (There may be more. Who knows. It’s probably going to be a disaster. So come see that. That will be fun.) Speaking of ZANDER CANNON, he is also the latest MN cartoonist to be interviewed by me on THE LUTEFISK SUSHI PODCAST.  It’s a pretty great talk about his nearly 20 year career in the funny books. There are also 19 other great episodes of THE LUTEFISK SUSHI PODCAST up currently, so by all means go check them all out. Lots of splendid talk about makin’ comics.

But back to SPRINGCON…

So in addition to the usual SUPERMARKET VIGILANTE, TOMMY CHICAGO, and MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE books for sale (most of which you can buy anytime day or night via the magic of the internet), I’ll be debuting two new books:

ARNOLD THE SUPER CARDINAL: HOLY CRAP

and THE CASE AGAINST AUTOBIO

So be sure to come by and pick that stuff up. I should also be sharing a table with BUD BURGY, so also pick up his new MEATFIST AND GRONK book as well as the CONTINUITY GUY books he and I did together.  Hope to see you there!

IT’S WAR 2–pgs 48-50, also: ‘SPRINGCON’ is this weekend!

We’re halfway there, all!  How is everyone doing?  I’m guessing by the total lack of comments and serious drop in readership numbers, not so good…

Anyhoo….  SPRINGCON IS THIS WEEKEND!!!  I’ll be there….kinda…sorta….for a couple hours each day of it.  Luckily—or is it LUCKESily?!–I’ll be sharing a table with friend’o’the blog EARL LUCKES who will be manning a table for the first time!  So stop on by and say hi to me–or more likely Earl–and pick up some of our comics, including the all-new CONTINUITY GUY: CHRONO CHAOS!!!

IT’S WAR 2–pgs 44-47, also: ‘SPRINGCON’ is this weekend

All right CONTINUITY GUY fans– BROTHER-2-THE-NITE has finally entered the story proper!  Speaking of the story–  up until now IT’S WAR 2 was written intentionally in 2-4 page vignettes to set everything up–you know, knock off a “chapter” or two in the bathroom kinda thing .  Well, the Meat and Po’ta’ters of the story is here.  So if you were reading this as an actual, physical comic its the point where you have to keep reading.  Nothing but storytelling kinesis!!!  But sadly this is now serialized as a webcomic, which will make for…well… potentially annoying breaks.  So I apologize in advance if every damn page seems like a cliffhanger from here on out.

Speaking of apologies… SPRINGCON IS THIS WEEKEND!!!
Well…the apology is mine.

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #5–pgs 22 & 23(of 45), also: ‘MANLY PIN-UP’ by Latham L Luepke, and a cameo in “Introspective Comics”!

I debated from the start of the series how far I should take the whole ‘BETSY ROSS’ side of BETSY ROSSBOT.  The knitting needles gag was something I thought of pretty early on, but wasn’t sure if I wanted to go there.  Once I determined what Betsy’s actual origin was, focusing on her ‘seamstressness’ became moot–so I included it here as a mislead to the readers as to what lays ahead.  That, and I think it’s still pretty funny.

ALSO:  Last weekend at SPRINGCON I was given the new mini-comic by Conspirator LATHAM L LUEPKE.   This act of generosity reminded me I was a total dick, and had promised Latham a couple months ago I’d draw a pin-up for him of his characters.  So with some time on my hands and a hang-over to nurse I dove in and drew one.  Much to my surprise an hour or so after I was done Latham came back to my table with a hilarious pin-up of the MANLY TALES gang.  Will this twisted game of one-upsmanship never cease?!?!

FINALLY:  Hey awesome! I make a pretty swell cameo in todays “INTROSPECTIVE COMICS” by RYAN DOW.  It’ll be up until Sunday, and yes–this really happened!

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #5–pgs 20 & 21(of 45), also: Matt Chicorel and I say “So Long, ‘LOST'” (part 1 of 2)

I think the reason I enjoy doing humor comics so much is their dependance on TALKING.  I am pretty dreadful at doing believable, original, exciting action sequences (like how I highlighting Betsy’s right hook twice in two pages).  So…uhhh…get ready for a few more pages of that.  But worry not, “action” has been on my to-do list for a while, and MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #7 (now available!) was a big step towards getting better at it.

ALSO:  As I mentioned last week, MATT CHICOREL and I did some ‘LOST’ pin-ups at last weekends SPRINGCON.  In a perfectly LOSTish twist of fate, after the con on Saturday Matt, BUD BURGY, and I went out and did some serious drinking for about 8 hours.  At one point we ended up at Nye’s where on a TV in the corner was none other than…LOST!  Matt then proceeded to teach me the LOST drinking game (You take a drink every time “Jack looks serious”,”Kate sucks”, “Sawyer says son of a bitch”, “Hurley is fat”, etc).  You can play along during the 2nd to last episode on TUESDAY, MAY 18th.  In the meantime, here’s the LOST pin-up I pencilled and Matt inked:

‘SPRINGCON’ is happening right now!!!

If you’re reading this and it’s between the hours of 10am and 5pm on SATURDAY or SUNDAY you should really be attending SPRINGCON at the MN STATE FAIRGROUNDS.  Otherwise, you should be working on your submission for LUTEFISK SUSHI ‘D“–you only have ONE MORE MONTH!!!

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #5–pgs 18 & 19(of 45), also: a new “TOMMY CHICAGO’ mini adventure, and ‘LOST’ jams with Matt Chicorel @ ‘SPRINGCON’–Saturday/Sunday (May 15/16, 2010)

Prepare yourself!  Although we are about 150 pages into this MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE epic at this point, you are now only one more weekend away from an actual action sequence.  Who says I don’t know how to build suspense?!  Speaking of the weekend…

SPRINGCON, Minnesota’s premiere ‘mainstream’ comic book convention is this weekend (MAY 15/16 from 10am-5pm both days)! I’ve already previewed the 2 new books I’ll have available (along with the MN convention debut of CONTINUITY GUY and all the usual back issues), but now bear witness to the thing I am probably the most excited for–collaborating with MATT CHICOREL!!!  I picked up a couple of Matt’s books a few years ago and was instantly hooked.  After his work on the MUSCLES AND FIGHT anthology I was a fan for life, and honored to be associated with him.  Matt live in Milwaukee, but the future being what it is Matt and I have become ‘social networking’ pals–and so I was excited to learn he’d be in town for Springcon, giving us a chance to chat it up in person for a change.  But that wasn’t enough for me.  I’ve really, really wanted to collaborate with Matt in some way for a while now, so I preyed upon our mutual love of LOST.  I proposed Matt do a LOST drawing I ink, and I’ll do a LOST drawing he inks–and Matt agreed!  Said drawings will then be a part of the Springcon Lupus Foundation art auction.  Here’s a sneak peek of the pencils for our gentleman’s agreement:

That’s mine, and here’s Matt’s:

I’ll be sure to get a photo of the finished works and post those next week.

But before we go…  Even though there will be a whole new issue of TOMMY CHICAGO available this weekend at SPRINGCON by BRIAN BASTIAN and myself, Brian and BOB LIPSKI went behind my back and and created a fantastic new 3-page web-only TC adventure.  Fine work boys! ….you are now both dead to me…
