ZINEFEST is SAT, Sept 22!!! Also: Process of a pin-up

Hey all. So while I’ve been working on things like my LUTEFISK SUSHI E contribution and some other stuff, it has come to my attention I will be tabling at MINNEAPOLIS ZINEFEST 2012in a week! ZINEFEST is 12pm-6pm at Powderhorn Park Recreational Center, 3400 15th Ave S., Minneapolis MN 55407. Admission is free. I’ll be tabling along with cartooning friends like BUD BURGY and zinesters of all kinds. So come by and check it out! In the meanwhile, read up on interviews with myself and other Zinefest exhibitors HERE.

ALSO:  You may or may not be aware my cartooning friends MATT CHIC is currently in the midst of posting his graphic novel EGYPTIAN SHUMBA!  Now, I’ve known about Matt’s work on EGYPTIAN SHUMBA for quite some time now, so about a year and a half ago I thought I’d do a pin-up with his many (10!!!) Night Light Comics gang teaming up with my MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE gang.  So I sketched out an homage to Kirby’s FANTASTIC FOUR #1 cover.  Not being terribly familiar with drawing Matt’s characters I decided I’d start by inking my characters first. So I inked in BETSY ROSSBOT with a Pentel Pocket Brush…and immediatly hated how it looked. So I put the pin-up aside and figured I’d get back around to it someday.   That someday was about 2 weeks ago. With SHUMBA chapters being posted every week I figured now was the time to get it done. The first thing I did was decide to ink initially with the Pentel Stylo before moving onto the Brush Pen, so here’s how that looked at first:

Eventually I Styloed in everyone, added some blacks, and made the monster a menace:

There! I had completed the pin-up. And after a year and a half it turned out pretty good.  The final step was to just scan it in and do some digital tom-foolery, and…

So there you have it!  Be sure to check out Chic’s EGYPTIAN SHUMBA graphic novel as it posts every week (and then buy the book when it’s avaialable)!  So I’ll keep plugging away, try to update this blog more, and in the meanwhile I hope to see you Saturday at ZINEFEST!!!

MATT CHICOREL vs ‘MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE’, also: ‘GEEK REPORTICUS’, and’When Cartoonists go camping…”

One of my favorite things about doing a series like MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE is seeing other people’s drawings of the MTOC cast, and I’ve been lucky enough to get lots of said drawings.  Recently I got a whole slew of’em (yay!).  The first came from Milwaukee cartoonist, ‘MUSCLES and FIGHTS’ co-contributor, and a guy I feel I can (after a weekend of hard-core nerd partying) actually call a friend–MATT CHICOREL:

You might remember Matt from some rad LOST jams we did together last spring.  And while he lives far away, there is always a chance you might be seeing us do something else together in the next year or so.  Maybe.. Just sayin’…

ALSO: It was a big weekend for me!  Not only did I get to hang out with some friends and guest host on their THE GEEK REPORT  podcast (with special guest/old friend ALEX KUNO) I also went camping with some of my other friends for the 1st ANNUAL CARTOONIST CAMPING TRIP.  Not surprisingly, all hell broke loose:

So yeah…I was pretty drunk…and I’m MOSTLY sure events didn’t go down EXACTLY like that.  For instance…

Here is KEVIN CANNON and I enjoying each others company–about 10 beers and a couple of glasses of Lemonade/Root Beer/Whiskey concoctions before the ‘pretty lights’.  So who else was nearly killed you may be asking…

ATHENA’s “BOOTH BEARD” JASON , myself, ATHENA CURRIER, LARS MARTINSON, KEVIN CANNON, JAMIE SCHUMACHER, BRITT HAMMERBERG, LUPI McGINTY, and SARAH MOREAN (Click on their links to your immediate right for more on them and their wonderful works.  NICK, MARK, and STRAWBERRY MAMA not pictured).    Thanks for fun times, gang!  Can’t wait for next year!  And thanks again to MATT CHICOREL!   YAY FRIENDS!

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #5–pgs 24 & 25(of 45), also: Matt Chicorel and I say “So Long, ‘LOST'” (part 2 of 2)

As I said on the first post for this issue, originally issue 5 was broken up into two issues (Vol.1 and 2).  I had run out of time to get the whole thing done in time for FALLCON ’08, but had fortunately written the ‘TO BE CONTINUED” gag in the scripting stage, so it seemed like a pretty good break point.  From page 25 on the story takes a very sharp turn away from comedy/”action” into back story and historical fiction.  That’s another good reason the “KILL BILL” covers worked so well–this is one story, but it has two very different beats.  Prepare yourself for the even talkier than usual second half.

ALSO:  As you may be aware THE FINAL EPISODE OF ‘LOST’ AIRS ON SUNDAY (MAY 23rd)!!!  To commemorate not only this event, but our mutual love of everything LOST that has come before, cartoonist MATT CHICOREL and I did a couple of pin-ups.  Here’s the one Matt drew and I inked…and it’s freaking awesome!

   So long, LOST.

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #5–pgs 20 & 21(of 45), also: Matt Chicorel and I say “So Long, ‘LOST'” (part 1 of 2)

I think the reason I enjoy doing humor comics so much is their dependance on TALKING.  I am pretty dreadful at doing believable, original, exciting action sequences (like how I highlighting Betsy’s right hook twice in two pages).  So…uhhh…get ready for a few more pages of that.  But worry not, “action” has been on my to-do list for a while, and MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #7 (now available!) was a big step towards getting better at it.

ALSO:  As I mentioned last week, MATT CHICOREL and I did some ‘LOST’ pin-ups at last weekends SPRINGCON.  In a perfectly LOSTish twist of fate, after the con on Saturday Matt, BUD BURGY, and I went out and did some serious drinking for about 8 hours.  At one point we ended up at Nye’s where on a TV in the corner was none other than…LOST!  Matt then proceeded to teach me the LOST drinking game (You take a drink every time “Jack looks serious”,”Kate sucks”, “Sawyer says son of a bitch”, “Hurley is fat”, etc).  You can play along during the 2nd to last episode on TUESDAY, MAY 18th.  In the meantime, here’s the LOST pin-up I pencilled and Matt inked:

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #5–pgs 18 & 19(of 45), also: a new “TOMMY CHICAGO’ mini adventure, and ‘LOST’ jams with Matt Chicorel @ ‘SPRINGCON’–Saturday/Sunday (May 15/16, 2010)

Prepare yourself!  Although we are about 150 pages into this MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE epic at this point, you are now only one more weekend away from an actual action sequence.  Who says I don’t know how to build suspense?!  Speaking of the weekend…

SPRINGCON, Minnesota’s premiere ‘mainstream’ comic book convention is this weekend (MAY 15/16 from 10am-5pm both days)! I’ve already previewed the 2 new books I’ll have available (along with the MN convention debut of CONTINUITY GUY and all the usual back issues), but now bear witness to the thing I am probably the most excited for–collaborating with MATT CHICOREL!!!  I picked up a couple of Matt’s books a few years ago and was instantly hooked.  After his work on the MUSCLES AND FIGHT anthology I was a fan for life, and honored to be associated with him.  Matt live in Milwaukee, but the future being what it is Matt and I have become ‘social networking’ pals–and so I was excited to learn he’d be in town for Springcon, giving us a chance to chat it up in person for a change.  But that wasn’t enough for me.  I’ve really, really wanted to collaborate with Matt in some way for a while now, so I preyed upon our mutual love of LOST.  I proposed Matt do a LOST drawing I ink, and I’ll do a LOST drawing he inks–and Matt agreed!  Said drawings will then be a part of the Springcon Lupus Foundation art auction.  Here’s a sneak peek of the pencils for our gentleman’s agreement:

That’s mine, and here’s Matt’s:

I’ll be sure to get a photo of the finished works and post those next week.

But before we go…  Even though there will be a whole new issue of TOMMY CHICAGO available this weekend at SPRINGCON by BRIAN BASTIAN and myself, Brian and BOB LIPSKI went behind my back and and created a fantastic new 3-page web-only TC adventure.  Fine work boys! ….you are now both dead to me…

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #0–pg 11/12(of 23), also: a pin-up chic

Ahh favorite ‘cheat’ while doing a 24 hour comic–making the center pages into a double-page spread.  This one was especially fun building up to while ‘writing’ the story on the spot.  You hope when you get to this point you’ll have something worthy of a two-pager.  I think the randomly chosen Atlantis Lad-death word ‘New York City’ fits that bill.  My favorite part is the cymbal.  I was really into the stuff SEAN TENHOFF was doing on his BEANMEN web comic at the time, and felt its influence when I did that panel.

The Daily Goal Sketch WILL return–TOMORROW in fact!  But before then, a sketch I did in honor of the wonderful BUZZ POP comics by MATT CHICOREL  that I had just read.  They are fun stuff, and you should go buy some today!   Also, someone over at Marvel should give Matt one of the dozens of SPIDER-MAN titles to play with.  That would be awesome.  I haven’t read SPIDER-MAN regularly in years, but I’d buy that.  Poly-bagged.  With trading cards and variant covers.
