I’m still alive, drawing, and making podcasts!

Hey all. It’s been a while, right? But I assure you I am very much alive and hard at work on comics and such. I’m nearly done with a 24 pg mini-comic for this November’s LUTEFISK SUSHI E show at ALTERED ESTHETICS (which, if you are a MN cartoonist, you’re welcome and encouraged to be a part of too!).  The downside to this, of course, is that since its being done special for the show I can’t post any of it here. BUT BUT BUT shortly after I finish that I PROMISE I will get back to posting content–and an ALL NEW STORY–here. I’m going to finish a graphic novel I started in January over the next year or so and will start posting pages here once a week SOOOOON!  Promise!!!

I’ve also been slacking on the LUTEFISK SUSHI PODCAST as you may have noticed, but will do my best to get back on track there, too.  As a sign of good faith, there’s a brand new episode up RIGHT NOW!!!  http://www.cartoonistconspiracy.com/sushipodcast/2012/08/lutefisk-sushi-podcast-episode-24-shloggs/

In the twenty-fourth episode host DANNO KLONOWSKI speaks with Matt “SHLOGGS” Risnes . Despite the fact this podcast is the audio sampling of MN Cartoonists, SHLOGGS is in fact NOT a cartoonist, rather Shloggs is one of Danno’s oldest friends on earth.  In addition to that honor, Shloggs is an avid film aficionado, as well as a blogger and frequent and sought after film podcast guest who, rather than filling the internet with nerd rage, fills his blog posts and podcast appearances with eloquent logic and critical thinking about the medium of filmmaking.  That in mind, Danno and Shloggs spend this episode breaking down and discussing their favorite (and least favorite) film adaptations of comic books.  Shloggs provides the insight into the filmmaking and Danno discusses the ways in which being either faithful or disrespectful of the source material can make or break a film (depending on the film, obviously).

SPOILER ALERTS!!! If you have not seen the recent DARK KNIGHT RISES or AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (and good for you on that one), we discuss key plot points. Other films discussed include: SCOTT PILGRIM vs THE WORLD, BATMAN ’89, The HELLBOY series, the recent Marvel films including AVENGERS, THE CROW, and several more.

The Lutefisk Sushi Podcast is sponsored by the INTERNATIONAL CARTOONIST CONSPIRACY, the ALTERED ESTHETICS GALLERY, and the NORDEAST COMICS SUMMIT.  The Lutefisk Sushi podcast is a STAPLEGENIUS.COM(cast) production.

Lutefisk Sushi Podcast SPECIALSODE: The LUTEFISK SUSHI E submission guidelines

http://www.cartoonistconspiracy.com/sushipodcast/2012/07/lutefisk-sushi-podcast-specialsode-the-lutefisk-sushi-e-submission-guidelines/

In this Lutefisk Sushi Podcast SPECIALSODE host DANNO KLONOWSKI walks you thru the process of submitting a mini-comic for the LUTEFISK SUSHI E show (submissions due: SEPTEMBER 15th, 2012). It’s not too complicated. The International Cartoonist Conspiracy of MPLS/STPL are inviting MN cartoonists to take part in the 5th Lutefisk Sushi bento box/mini-comic/art show extravaganza! Make a mini-comic no bigger than 5.5″x8.5″, submit 160 copies of that comic (and original artwork) to ALTERED ESTHETICS GALLERY, and then come have a blast at the opening on FRIDAY, NOV 2nd, 2012!  So either read what you just did and follow the link the LUTEFISK SUSHI E website for more information, or listen to Danno ramble on it about for 13 minutes. The choice is yours, but might I suggest you start drawing, Minnesota!!!

The LUTEFISK SUSHI PODCAST

I know, I know.  Its been a whole 3 days since I said I was cutting back on blogging here, but…SECRET PROJECT REVEALED!  So here it is, internet–the first episode of the LUTEFISK SUSHI PODCAST!!!

This podcast–hosted by me–is peripherally tied-into the past and future (Nov 2012–box ‘E’!) LUTEFISK SUSHI mini-comic art shows put on by INTERNATIONAL CARTOONIST CONSPIRACY, BIG TIME ATTIC, and ALTERED ESTHETICS GALLERY.  I’ll hand out deadlines and the whatnot for the upcoming show as they approach, but mostly the focus of the show is talking to the cartoonists of MN–about their work, their cartooning loves, and what it means to be a doodler in the land of 10,000 lakes.  Episode 1 features BUD BURGYSome future guests are already lined-up, and frankly I look forward to talking to everyone–EVERY. ONE.–whether I know them or not.  I want to see the rich cartooning landscape of Minnesota get its due, and I want to get to know everyone in the process.  So give it a listen.  If you like what you hear let me know.  Lets see this podcast–and the MN cartooning scene–grow and grow!

A super-huge I TOTALLY WOULD HAVE BEEN LOST WITHOUT THEM shout-out to STEVEN STWALLEY and JAMIE SCHUMACHER!!! You guys are the best!!!  Thanks for all your help and doing!  And a big thanks to the Sushi quoram–I promise not to sully the name!

COUNTDOWN to…24 HOUR COMIC DAY, FALLCON, FALSE WITNESS #2 and LAW IN POLITICS–day 4 (of 4)

24 HOUR COMIC DAY is tomorrowSaturday October 3rd (to Sunday October 4th).  Locally(MPLS/STPL, MN) the event will be held at the MN CENTER FOR BOOK ARTS and begins at 10 AM.  All the details are HERE, and we’ll also be blogging throughout the day THERE as well.

FALSE WITNESS #2 -- NOW AVAILABLE!!!

FALSE WITNESS #2 -- NOW AVAILABLE!!!

ALSO:  FALSE WITNESS #2 is now for sale online and at some local comic retailers (Source, Big Brain). It will also be available at FALLCON (Oct 10th and 11th)!.  It is written and pencilled by BILL PRENDERGAST, and features inks/finishes/etc by myself, LUPI MCGINTY, DANIEL J OLSON, JAMES POWELL, and RYAN DOW.

Speaking of that project, the October/November issue of LAW IN POLITICS (MINNESOTA) is now out and features an illustration of MN’s own highly-flammable Rep. Michele Bachmann I drew in FALSE WITNESS: THE MICHELE BACHMANN STORY #1 cropped and colored(again by me) in their “TURKEYS OF THE YEAR” feature, in a section about Ms. Bachmann’s best quotes over the last year.  This issue of LAW AND POLITICS also kicks off the “TURKEYS…” features with a nice illustration by co-Conspirator KEN AVIDOR.  I don’t know if I have the right to post either of the images from the magazine here, so instead I’ll compromise with these:  First up a drawing Ken did of me in the battle of my life (from his LUTEFISK SUSHI ‘C’ contribution)…

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–Guest Artist Spectacular–pg 10(of 14)–by Lupi McGinty and Brian Bastian

pg 10--art: Lupi McGinty, words: Brian Bastian

pg 10--art: Lupi McGinty, words: Brian Bastian

BRIAN BASTIAN—  Believes in a writing philosophy that states:  “Too many cooks spoil the broth.”  This is why he always works alone and never in the kitchen.

LUPI MCGINTY—  I met LUPI about a year and a half ago when she made her presence known to both the ALTERED ESTHETICS  gallery and the INTERNATIONAL CARTOONIST CONSPIRACY (Locals #612/#651) by contributing to the LUTEFISK SUSHI “C”show and box set.  Lupi continues to be an active Conspirator, even taking a chair on the “QUORUM OF TWELVE(or so)” who are organizing LUTEFISK SUSHI “D”.  Lupi does some cool comics you can see on her blog (like ANTI-GIRL),  concert posters, and is also a part of the art team for FALSE WITNESS: THE MICHELE BACHMANN STORYcomic series (issue #2 out soon!).  I would even say Lupi’s art is the best known “face” of the FALSE WITNESS series, considering it’s been seen by thousands not ONCE, but TWICE(!)in the CITY PAGES.  So basically, if Bachmann loses in 2010 Lupi’s days are numbered.  Sorry about that, Loops.  You’re a great talent and will be dearly missed.

Also: BUD BURGY and “CONTINUITY GUY” educates us all on the Blinovich Limitation Effect.  Enjoy!

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–Guest Artist Spectacular–pg 7(of 14)–by Daniel J Olson and Brian Bastian

pg 7--art: Daniel J Olson, words: Brian Bastian

pg 7--art: Daniel J Olson, words: Brian Bastian

BRIAN BASTIAN— was killed last night by enemy fire while imbedded with the Fightin’ 84th just outside of Baghdad, where he was busy writing the script for a comedy version of  Joe Sacco-stlye war reporting  comics.

DANIEL J OLSON– Daniel J Olson and I are NOT the same person!  Despite the “Parent Trap” style antics we get into all the time–which ARE admittedly  fun–we are frankly dumbfounded at the constant confusion.  I do this website.  Dan does www.bewilderedkid.com/blog.   This is my webcomic,  SHENANIGANS  is Dan’s.  I do stuff like the Guest Artist Spectacular, Dan does stuff like SUPER FANTASTICA COMIX.  I do TOMMY CHICAGO with a writer BRIAN BASTIAN, Dan works on SUPER MAXI-PAD GIRL with a writer who is also his wife (Hi, AJ!).  I have done work for MUSCLES AND FIGHTS, BIG FUNNY, LUTEFISK SUSHI and FALSE WITNESS: THE MICHELE BACHMANN STORY (Issue #2 out soon!), Dan has…uhh…also done that.  I have done a 24 Hour Comic Day Logo Image for the Minneapolis/St Paul 24 Hour Day Event, Dan…oh…he did this years, didn’t he?  WAIT!  This one is difference, for sure: I live in Northeast Minneapolis, and Dan calls St Paul hom–what?….REALLY?!…No way!  That’s like 9 blocks away!  AWESOME!  We should totally get Bud and Ryan to live over here now!……………………..ok, so we’re the same guy.

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–GUEST ARTIST SPECTACULAR–pg 6(of 14)–by Mike Toft and Brian Bastian

pg 6-- art: Mike Toft, words: Brian Bastian

pg 6-- art: Mike Toft, words: Brian Bastian

BRIAN BASTIAN— A Writer? I thought McFarlane and Liefeld proved writers were passe 18 years ago?!  Who let him in?

MIKE TOFT— Ah, the sturdy wrist of Mike Toft.  As I’ve noted before, I owe a debt of gratitude to Mike Toft.  He’s a fabulous guy and a fabulous cartoonists.  Not  has he done his cracker-jack mini-comic BRAIN FOOD well over a decade (I think it qualifies for “Respected Institution” status now!), but he’s a founding member of the Minneapolis Cell of the International Cartoonists Conspiracy, a good chap to sit next to at a convention, and always there contributing strong for local comics projects like BIG FUNNY, MUSCLES AND FIGHTSALLEY CAT, and LUTEFISK SUSHI.  Now if we can just get him to do a 24 HOUR COMIC…a twelve hour comic?….eight?!…Come on, Mike!   Anyway…rumor has it Mike will not only have some fresh BRAIN FOOD for FALLCON, but he will also be lauching his own website SOON, SOON, SOON!!!  Stay tuned.

Also:  A Moment of Silence, if you please…
