Here is ARNOLD THE SUPER CARDINAL: THE RIGHT WING RISES. I did this 12 pager during 24 Hour Comic Day, since I arrived hours late this year. Got it written, and drawn in a little under 6 hours. I brought it home, scanned it, lettered it, and colored it in about the same amount of time. This story possibly predicts the outcome of the 2012 election. Will it?! Read it and find out for yourself!

A year or so ago my friend LUPI asked me to be a part of her anthology “GERM WARFARE” (Which you can buy a physical copy of here). Each story is based around either anthropromorphic germs or two germaphobes Stew and Beryl. I wasn’t sure what to do, so I just went all-out sci-fi epic. That’s a comedy. Why not? I think it’s pretty fun, as is the rest of the book WHICH YOU SHOULD BUY!!! $7.95! A great price for a great book!
MIX is only 3 weeks away! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!?! So I’m counting-down to MIX each week with a sampling of what I’ll have to offer. Last time I mentioned the debuts of both the MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE and SUPERMARKET VIGILANTE graphic novels, but those won’t be the only debuts I’m part of…
Conspirator, FALSE WITNESS collaborator, and person with whom in 5 days I will be very drunk with in Mexico LUPI McGINTY will finally be debuting her GERM WARFARE book at MIX! GERM WARFARE, an anthology, tells the collected stories (by Lupi, her husband Mark, and others) of Stew and Beryl–a couple of germaphobes with a germ-prone baby. There are also lots of anthropomorphic germs. The image above is from my very sci-fi seven page take on these characters. I can’t wait to see the book! Its been gestating for almost a year now. I recently got to see the cover by ATHENA CURRIER (who will also be having a debut of her own–the collected ACTION ATHENA)and its totally amazing! Lupi is also a co-host of the GEEK REPORT podcast and they will be doing a live show at MIX as well. So yay!!! Lots to look forward too! I’ll see you at MIX!
Also: The 24 HOUR COMIC DAY episode of the LUTEFISK SUSHI PODCAST is up now and the next episode–featuring the Beardhero himself–will be up come Thursday.
BANTAM!!! So my intention on this years 24 HOUR COMIC was to go in with a blank slate (which I’ve never been able to do), and up until about 2 days before the event my mind was empty. Then out of nowhere at work my brain informed me I would be doing Arnold–Thanks for nothing, brain! Luckily my brain also reminded me of the fact that my friend LUPI McGINTY had recently said what probably should have been the final word on super hero bird comics with her Lutefisk Sushi D submission ‘BANTAM’ (which she is also serializing RIGHT NOW on her blog). I’m even fortunate enough to own a painting Lupi did of Bantam’s sidekick LITTLE PECKER. But not wanting to ignore the massive shadow she was casting, and also knowing she would not be at 24HCD, I decided I would work Bantam in to the story somewhere and make it a SURPRISE for her when she finally got to read it. As luck (and pacing) would have it, BANTAM got to show up just as I reached my traditional pgs.12/13 double-splash. Rumor has it Lupi really enjoyed the Bantam (and ‘Little Pecker’) cameo. Another rumor even has it that Lupi and I may be teaming-up sometime soon to reunite Bantam and Arnold in a tale we make together. Stay tuned….
BASTIAN: Hey kids, do you think that history is boring? Well it’s full of atrocities like cannibalism. You just need to do a little more research than what’s in your school books. Remember that for your next school report. Or find a movie that’s based on a horrible world event and write the report on that. Today’s classes are too crowded for anyone to really check up on your work.
DANK: All this flashback business serves two purposes–1) to clue in any “new” readers, and 2)to cram in more of our over-flowing cauldron of story ideas. Over-all it was fun to draw since I got to work in the murder of BOB LIPSKI and the kid which I’m pretty sure wasn’t in the script.
BASTIAN: I love those skeletons. I’ll say when a script calls for death or gore, you don’t dink around. Bravo.
DANK: FUN FACT!– Brian and Bob would debut these books every year during Free Comic Book Day at JIMMY JAM COMICS in Rochester, MN where Mark worked/managed. In the time between when we started this issue and when FCBD occurred Jimmy Jam closed up shop, so we had to give this book to Mark when we saw him at Spring(nee Micro)Con. Wait…that wasn’t that fun of a fact.
ALSO: The 4th issue of FALSE WITNESS: THE MICHELE BACHMANN STORY is now out, and some reviews are starting to come in! CITY PAGES and Comic Book Resources’ ROBOT 6 both did nice little promo things, but the real deal is the review on THE TALKING POINTS MEMO. The reviewer liked it despite himself! Nifty! As for my role in this issue…Well first off the whole issue was drawn by LUPI McGINTY and JAMES POWELL. James inked all his work on the ‘flashback’ sequence, but I did all the inking on Lupi’s ‘God in the Bar’ sequences:
Lupi, James, BILL PRENDERGAST (the writer), and I all did the ever-changing backgrounds, though I ended up doing a majority of them. KEVIN CANNON also did the brilliant opening page (and let me tell you it was AWESOME seeing Kevin’s rendition of Lupi and I’s ‘God in the bar’ sequence). Finally, I (and my friend Photoshop) did the Wrathful God back cover:
I have done work on all four issues of FALSE WITNESS, and I can say without a shadow of doubt this is the best issue both in terms of art AND story. I highly recommend you go BUY IT TODAY. Hell, buy all 4. They are totally worth it!
AND AS IF THAT WEREN’T ENOUGH: I honestly can’t believe the outstanding work BUD BURGY has been doing bringing my script for CONTINUITY GUY: CHRONO CHAOS to life. Seriously. His best work ever. Hands down. So be sure to check in on Continuity Guy and company every week. I’d say right now is a prefect jumping-on point for new readers, but honestly these stories never make too much sense until about 5 pages to the end. But it’s a fun ride getting there!
One of my favorite things about doing a series like MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE is seeing other people’s drawings of the MTOC cast, and I’ve been lucky enough to get lots of said drawings. Recently I got a whole slew of’em (yay!). The first came from Milwaukee cartoonist, ‘MUSCLES and FIGHTS’ co-contributor, and a guy I feel I can (after a weekend of hard-core nerd partying) actually call a friend–MATT CHICOREL:
You might remember Matt from some rad LOST jams we did together last spring. And while he lives far away, there is always a chance you might be seeing us do something else together in the next year or so. Maybe.. Just sayin’…
ALSO: It was a big weekend for me! Not only did I get to hang out with some friends and guest host on their THE GEEK REPORT podcast (with special guest/old friend ALEX KUNO) I also went camping with some of my other friends for the 1st ANNUAL CARTOONIST CAMPING TRIP. Not surprisingly, all hell broke loose:
So yeah…I was pretty drunk…and I’m MOSTLY sure events didn’t go down EXACTLY like that. For instance…
Here is KEVIN CANNON and I enjoying each others company–about 10 beers and a couple of glasses of Lemonade/Root Beer/Whiskey concoctions before the ‘pretty lights’. So who else was nearly killed you may be asking…
ATHENA’s “BOOTH BEARD” JASON , myself, ATHENA CURRIER, LARS MARTINSON, KEVIN CANNON, JAMIE SCHUMACHER, BRITT HAMMERBERG, LUPI McGINTY, and SARAH MOREAN (Click on their links to your immediate right for more on them and their wonderful works. NICK, MARK, and STRAWBERRY MAMA not pictured). Thanks for fun times, gang! Can’t wait for next year! And thanks again to MATT CHICOREL! YAY FRIENDS!
