MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #5–the pin-ups (part 2 of 2) featuring Jesse Gillespie, Ryan Dow, Dave Strong, and Spanky Cermak

As that issue 5 was originally broken up into two “volumes”(issues), this left a lot of space for pin-ups.  Thanks muchly to everyone who donated their time and art into making this issue awesome, including:

JESSE GILLESPIE’s homage to “Lady Liberty Leading the People” is easily one of the most beautiful pieces of original art I have in my possession.  This guy really needs to stop spending all his time hugging people and just start cranking out more comics!

The award-winning RYAN DOW’s homage to “Magnus, Robot Fighter” is easily one of the most robot-fightery pieces of art I have in my collection.  As if you didn’t know, but Ryan makes the wonderful INTROSPECTIVE COMICS.  The recently released collection “THE ART OF FAILING BUDDHISM” is must, and you should buy one today.  I actually turn up frequently in the book (and in the on-going webcomic), and a drinking game has developed.  So whenever you see me or fellow Conspirator DANIEL J OLSON being ‘Introspective’, be sure to take a shot (sometimes, like in THIS EXAMPLE, you’d have to make it a double).

DAVE STRONG is one of many cartoonists about town who I don’t see regularly enough.  His stuff is wonderful and I was grateful as all heck when he presented me with the above Atlantis Lad.

SPANKY CERMAK is another fantastic example of the insanely huge cartoonist talent pool we have here in Minneapolis.  Like Dave, I pretty much only see Spanky at cons, but his stuff is fantastic and I’m honored to have shared pages with him in the MUSCLES AND FIGHTS anthologies.

Whoo!  Seven pin-ups all in total for issue 5.  Nice!  I only wish each issue could boast so much guest talent–if for no other reason than the back-log of pin-ups I have yet to print or post on the web.  I promise to get to them all…maybe before the year is out even!  Thanks again to everyone who contributed to this issue.  Be sure to check out their links for more great art and comics!

retrospecticus: “CONTINUITY GUY” release at AE

On Friday, April 2nd, 2010 the “CONTINUITY GUY” graphic novella zapped its way into our world, being released at the ALTERED ESTHETICS show “Resident Artists 4: Collaborations”.   To commemorate this event, here are some photos of the night presented in the way only a CONTINUITY GUY release could be–completely out of sequential order and making little sense.  Enjoy!

CONTINUITY GUY artist BUD BURGY points out to RYAN DOW who the ass is who wrote such a perplexing and commercial-unfriendly story.

CONTINUITY GUY creator CASEY ‘NELS’ NELSON enjoys what Bud and I have done with his stolen property while Bud explains where nipples are and what they do.

JESSE GILLESPIE makes a rare sojourn from his Northwoods bunker to see art and stock up on canned goods.  He also gave me the coolest gift imaginable.

Moments earlier WILL DINSKI and SARAH MOREAN drank from a bottle clearly marked “DO NOT DRINK”.  Almost immediately the walls seemed to get taller and taller to them.  Before you knew it they were nearly invisible to the naked eye.  Later, they were eaten by a spider.  They shall be dearly missed.

Not to be outdone, VAS LITTLECROW actually travels thru time before our very eyes.

Those professional models we hired finally show up.

The AE crew knew we were coming and so they quite literally baked a cake.

SEAN TENHOFF and his lady friend make plans for what the AE bathroom will look like at LUTEFISK SUSHI ‘D’.

DAN “The Frame-Filler” MURPHY shows how he earned his nickname.

MIKE TOFT then challenges Dan to a ‘Frame Fill-Off’.  Murphy retains his title.

JAMES POWELL takes a brief moment to do some cleansing, personal introspection.  He then leaves insisting he has to find a nun to punch or the hyenas won’t let him sleep.

TED ANDERSON also tries for Murphy’s title, but is disqualified when the lab results come back and he had tested positive for juicing.

LEELOO takes a moment out of her busy day to look adorable.  Awwwww….

BRITT AAMODT (author of the upcoming essay collection about MN cartoonists ‘OFF COLOR’) takes Bud’s challenge to find all the continuity errors in the CONTINUITY GUY script.  She gives up after 300.

CASSANDRA MONSON and birthday boy ERIK NELSON (who are to be wed next weekend!) pick the absolute worst time possible to review the MN tax laws for married couples.

DANIEL J OLSON and AJ NEIHAUS had just picked the spot on the map where they are going to leave me for dead on route to C2E2 and now could barely contain themselves.

Co-worker CHRIS OESTREICHER makes his patented camera mug.  You’re 9,323 for 9,323, buddy!  Great job!

Hearing of the challenge to de-throne Dan Murphy, co-worker KATRINA GLAIM makes a valiant (but ultimately losing) effort.

STEVE STWALLEY finally found that bonfire kindling he was looking for.

CONTINUITY GUY cover artist KEVIN CANNON insists on being just another face in the crowd…so much so that he causes a scene and becomes the center of attention.  It was very awkward.

BUD finds his ‘last call’ date for the evening.

Thinking I had left, everyone had a really good laugh at my expense.  And then the cameras flash went off, and things became uncomfortably quiet.  The night was officially over.

Many, many thanks to everyone who stopped by whether they were there for us or any of the ‘resident artists’.  Many thanks to everyone who picked up a copy of the book, and many thanks to everyone I didn’t get a (good) picture of.   It was a really fun time!

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–GUEST ARTIST SPECTACULAR–pg 1(of 14)–by Jesse Gillespie and Brian Bastian

YES!  Here we go with “THE 12 TRIALS OF FLEMING HAZMAT–the MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE GUEST ARTIST SPECTACULAR”!!!  I’ll waste no time explaining the “WHYs” behind this project, just know that it rocks(as you can see!) and it’s going to be a great 2 weeks.  Thanks again SO SO SO SO MUCH to all the creators who are taking part.  Speaking of which, lets meet two of them…

BRIAN BASTIAN is a writer–a damn funny writer who I love to work with as often as I can.  For instance, he writes TOMMY CHICAGO which I draw, and sometimes we do short stuff like RALPH THE PREHISTORIC BUTCHER.  Brian also wrote MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #4 which will be posted here soon.  Brian writes other comics as well, like BOB LIPSKI’s UPTOWN GIRL (currently Bob is working on the first several hundred page UPTOWN GIRL original graphic novel that Brian wrote), and he even writes the occassional movie.  You should work with Brian too, if only so I can see his head explode from all the deadline pressure.

JESSE GILLESPIE draws some of the most lushly beautiful lines in the world.  Check out his 24 HOUR COMIC from last year if you don’t believe me.  Jesse is also one of the best huggers alive.  Jesse joined the Cartoonist Conspiracy  about a year ago, and neither he nor the group have been the same since.  His LITTLE EMO strip was the well-deserved darling of the BIG FUNNY project, and he now has many irons in the ink–like being an assistant for PETER GROSS, doing an amazing short for the upcoming UPTOWN GIRL PRESENTS #4, and working on a superhero mini-series with TED ANDERSON.  Jesse also did an amazing back cover for MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #5, which’ll be up here one day soon.  I look forward to seeing everything this guy does–which’ll all be amazing!   HUGS, buddy!!!

YAY COMICS!  The “GUEST ARTIST SPECTACULAR” continues tomorrow with EARL LUCKES (and BRIAN)!

BIG FUNNY (www.cartoonistconspiracy.com/bigfunny) opens FRIDAY.  The BIG FUNNY editors hung the show Monday night.  Here are some highlights…

For some reason Steve spent most of the night polybagging his comics...unaware you're not supposed do that a page at a time.

In all seriousness, this is the bona fide STEAL of the show! Jesse Gillespie's "LITTLE EMO" original is going for only $100!!! ...and now back to the frivolity...

After the acid kicked in, Steve spent about an hour watching the floor walk on HIM, and Kevin tried to figure out if he was drawn and the comic was "real".

Steve is surprisingly unfazed when I catch him slow-dancing with some vintage newspaper comics from 1903.
