The “lost” guest pin-ups: James Powell (and the kids these days)

JAMES POWELL is a crazy talented cartoonist, and I’m pretty honored my art gets to stand next to his in the pages of FALSE WITNESS: THE MICHELE BACHMANN STORY.  And in addition to being an illustrator, he is also a sometimes teacher of comics to the youth.  From what James tells me the kids love making comics, but they can’t not go three panels without killing off a main character.  As you can imagine, its kinda hard to teach the mechanics of sequential storytelling when the people you’re trying to teach don’t have anyone live long enough to tell a story.  So in one class James made a compromise with the kids–“Draw stories where everyone lives, and on the last day we’ll just do stories where the characters die!”   From what he tells me he drew the inspiration for this from the many deaths of Atlantis Lad in MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE.  So when that fated day came for the kids to draw some characters dying, guess who James had them kill off over and over…

Thats just about the coolest thing ever!!!  Thanks, James!

TC: FCBD–part 8(of 12)–by Bastian and Dank, also: “False Witness” #4 gets reviewed, and be sure to check in on ‘Continuity Guy: Chrono Choas’

BASTIAN:  Hey kids, do you think that history is boring? Well it’s full of atrocities like cannibalism. You just need to do a little more research than what’s in your school books. Remember that for your next school report. Or find a movie that’s based on a horrible world event and write the report on that. Today’s classes are too crowded for anyone to really check up on your work.

DANK:  All this flashback business serves two purposes–1) to clue in any “new” readers, and 2)to cram in more of our over-flowing cauldron of story ideas.  Over-all it was fun to draw since I got to work in the murder of BOB LIPSKI and the kid which I’m pretty sure wasn’t in the script.

BASTIAN:   I love those skeletons. I’ll say when a script calls for death or gore, you don’t dink around. Bravo.

DANK:  FUN FACT!– Brian and Bob would debut these books every year during Free Comic Book Day at JIMMY JAM COMICS in Rochester, MN where Mark worked/managed.  In the time between when we started this issue and when FCBD occurred Jimmy Jam closed up shop, so we had to give this book to Mark when we saw him at Spring(nee Micro)Con.  Wait…that wasn’t that fun of a fact.

ALSO:  The 4th issue of FALSE WITNESS: THE MICHELE BACHMANN STORY is now out, and some reviews are starting to come in!   CITY PAGES and Comic Book Resources’ ROBOT 6 both did nice little promo things, but the real deal is the review on THE TALKING POINTS MEMO.  The reviewer liked it despite himself!  Nifty!  As for my role in this issue…Well first off the whole issue was drawn by LUPI McGINTY and JAMES POWELL.  James inked all his work on the ‘flashback’ sequence, but I did all the inking on Lupi’s ‘God in the Bar’ sequences:

Lupi, James, BILL PRENDERGAST (the writer), and I all did the ever-changing backgrounds, though I ended up doing a majority of them.  KEVIN CANNON also did the brilliant opening page (and let me tell you it was AWESOME seeing Kevin’s rendition of Lupi and I’s ‘God in the bar’ sequence).  Finally, I (and my friend Photoshop) did the Wrathful God back cover:

I have done work on all four issues of FALSE WITNESS, and I can say without a shadow of doubt this is the best issue both in terms of art AND story.  I highly recommend you go BUY IT  TODAY.  Hell, buy all 4.  They are totally worth it!

AND AS IF THAT WEREN’T ENOUGH:  I honestly can’t believe the outstanding work BUD BURGY has been doing bringing my script for CONTINUITY GUY: CHRONO CHAOS to life.  Seriously.  His best work ever.  Hands down.  So be sure to check in on Continuity Guy and company every week.  I’d say right now is a prefect jumping-on point for new readers, but honestly these stories never make too much sense until about 5 pages to the end.  But it’s a fun ride getting there!

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #5–pgs 8 & 9, also: retrospecticus–“Iron and Candy” Cankeratures

My favorite part of doing this bit was grabbing arm-loads of my favorite DVDs and drawing them.  This will also be remembered as the point at which I gave up and just decided to coast on Joss Whedon’s coat-tails.

ALSO:  Last Friday (April 30th, 2010) several of my CARTOONIST CONSPIRACY Conspirators and I drew “Bad Caricatures” (or “Cankeratures“) to help raise money for our good friends at the ALTERED ESTHETICS GALLERY.  Things went very well!  The Cankeratures alone raised $200!!!  All drawings were done purely by donation, with many people only throwing in a buck or two.  Needless to say, we did LOTS and LOTS of drawing that night.  And it was pure fun.  So here’s a Retrospecticus of the evening done in photos, words, and doodles…

The fundraiser more or less started at 7pm.  Things were slow for about 15 minutes or so until people caught on to what we were up to.  We warmed up by drawing each other (“We” being L to R: KEVIN CANNON, LANCE WARD, STEVEN STWALLEY, DAN MURPHY, and CARLOS MERINO).

DANIEL J OLSON soon showed up to join in the fun.

As did RYAN DOW.

And MIKE TOFT!  But sadly…

…Altered Esthetics Exhibitions Director KRISTIN THOMPSON devoured Mike’s head as a part of the annual human sacrifice AE performs in order to assure a successful fundraiser.

AE’s Head Priestess JAMIE SCHUMACHER blessed the sacrifice, and then the cash started rolling in!!!

LUPI dips her brush-pen in the inkwell that is Mike’s skull and then joins in the drawing fun.  And now…some satisfied patrons of the arts:

The Cankeratures were scheduled to end at 10pm.  When I had to leave at 10:30 the scene looked like this:

So yeah…a pretty huge success!  I’m pretty sure we’ll be doing things like this again soon.  Oh…and in case you noticed the wall of Cankeratures we did of each other behind us, here’s some closer looks:

What?  Those aren’t close-up enough for you?  Well, here’s some awesome Cankeratures of myself, wife, and kid to wind this up:

Me by DAN MURPHY.  That’s right, kids.  The trademarked/living joke facial hair is gone…for now.

Me by STEVE STWALLEY.  This might be my favorite one, and only because Steve complimented my ever-greying hair.  Flattery will get you everywhere.  But enough about me.  My wife is convinced that NO ONE can draw her, so she threw down the gauntlet (and a few bucks):

The LOS.

And KEVIN CANNON bats clean-up!   Finally, my step-daughter was actually able to sit still for over 30 seconds, and here are the awesome results:

There’s the LOS again.  And last but certainly not least (since it’s one of my favorite drawings of the night):

An amazing LUPI Cankerature that was all a part of an amazing night, and I can’t wait to do it again soon!

COMING UP ON WEDNESDAY:  95% less content.

2: Countdown to C2E2

C2E2 begins Friday in Chicago, and I’ll be there mooching table space from co-Conspirator DANIEL J OLSON.  To prepare for this show there are few new projects I’ve been working on…

Here’s the new cover for MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #3, featuring the new streamlined look and KEVIN CANNON’s sweet logo.  The original issue 3 cover was pretty sweet (for a parody), and I thought it would be hard to top, but this one turned out to be perhaps my favorite new MANLY TALES cover.  You’ll be able to purchase it, the issue it encapsulates, and the 5 other issues of MANLY TALES (all with new covers) in one affordable package at C2E2.

ALSO:  This comic has technically been done and available for purchase online for several weeks now, but C2E2 marks the first time FALSE WINESS: THE MICHELE BACHMANN STORY #3 will be for sale to the public.  This issue is all about Michele’s love/hate relationship with gay Americans (ie: she loves to hate them).  It is written (as  always) by publisher BILL PRENDERGAST, and features art by LUPI McGINTY, JAMES POWELL, RYAN DOW and myself (and was edited/assembled by C2E2 table-mate DANIEL J OLSON).

retrospecticus: “CONTINUITY GUY” release at AE

On Friday, April 2nd, 2010 the “CONTINUITY GUY” graphic novella zapped its way into our world, being released at the ALTERED ESTHETICS show “Resident Artists 4: Collaborations”.   To commemorate this event, here are some photos of the night presented in the way only a CONTINUITY GUY release could be–completely out of sequential order and making little sense.  Enjoy!

CONTINUITY GUY artist BUD BURGY points out to RYAN DOW who the ass is who wrote such a perplexing and commercial-unfriendly story.

CONTINUITY GUY creator CASEY ‘NELS’ NELSON enjoys what Bud and I have done with his stolen property while Bud explains where nipples are and what they do.

JESSE GILLESPIE makes a rare sojourn from his Northwoods bunker to see art and stock up on canned goods.  He also gave me the coolest gift imaginable.

Moments earlier WILL DINSKI and SARAH MOREAN drank from a bottle clearly marked “DO NOT DRINK”.  Almost immediately the walls seemed to get taller and taller to them.  Before you knew it they were nearly invisible to the naked eye.  Later, they were eaten by a spider.  They shall be dearly missed.

Not to be outdone, VAS LITTLECROW actually travels thru time before our very eyes.

Those professional models we hired finally show up.

The AE crew knew we were coming and so they quite literally baked a cake.

SEAN TENHOFF and his lady friend make plans for what the AE bathroom will look like at LUTEFISK SUSHI ‘D’.

DAN “The Frame-Filler” MURPHY shows how he earned his nickname.

MIKE TOFT then challenges Dan to a ‘Frame Fill-Off’.  Murphy retains his title.

JAMES POWELL takes a brief moment to do some cleansing, personal introspection.  He then leaves insisting he has to find a nun to punch or the hyenas won’t let him sleep.

TED ANDERSON also tries for Murphy’s title, but is disqualified when the lab results come back and he had tested positive for juicing.

LEELOO takes a moment out of her busy day to look adorable.  Awwwww….

BRITT AAMODT (author of the upcoming essay collection about MN cartoonists ‘OFF COLOR’) takes Bud’s challenge to find all the continuity errors in the CONTINUITY GUY script.  She gives up after 300.

CASSANDRA MONSON and birthday boy ERIK NELSON (who are to be wed next weekend!) pick the absolute worst time possible to review the MN tax laws for married couples.

DANIEL J OLSON and AJ NEIHAUS had just picked the spot on the map where they are going to leave me for dead on route to C2E2 and now could barely contain themselves.

Co-worker CHRIS OESTREICHER makes his patented camera mug.  You’re 9,323 for 9,323, buddy!  Great job!

Hearing of the challenge to de-throne Dan Murphy, co-worker KATRINA GLAIM makes a valiant (but ultimately losing) effort.

STEVE STWALLEY finally found that bonfire kindling he was looking for.

CONTINUITY GUY cover artist KEVIN CANNON insists on being just another face in the crowd…so much so that he causes a scene and becomes the center of attention.  It was very awkward.

BUD finds his ‘last call’ date for the evening.

Thinking I had left, everyone had a really good laugh at my expense.  And then the cameras flash went off, and things became uncomfortably quiet.  The night was officially over.

Many, many thanks to everyone who stopped by whether they were there for us or any of the ‘resident artists’.  Many thanks to everyone who picked up a copy of the book, and many thanks to everyone I didn’t get a (good) picture of.   It was a really fun time!

Uptown Girl v. Tommy Chicago v. Manly Tales Of Cowardice–by Brian Bastian, Bob Lipski, and Danno Klonowski–pg 12(of 60), also: “FALSE WITNESS” #3 now available, and “Hitler’s ‘stache was better”

The UPTOWN GIRL vs TOMMY CHICAGO vs MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE crossover from 2008 was written by BRIAN BASTIAN, pencilled (and inked) by BOB LIPSKI, and inked (and pencilled) by me.   Brian and Bob are here to join me for some reflections on this project:

BRIAN BASTIAN:  The sheer joy of Jimmy seeing Atlantis Lad again (although he’s not aware of the terrible horrible secret of Atlantis Lad) is balanced nicely by the sheer hatred between Fleming Hazmat and Tommy Chicago. And please if someone out there does know how much it costs to maintain a super cyborg, let me know.  I’m interested in getting one, but I need to know if I’ll be able to afford the upkeep.

BOB LIPSKI:  Look at the background action in panel 3!   All Danno, I assure you.  On a side note, I love long stretched out panels.

DANNO KLONOWSKI:  Also mine:  Bob just had TC yelling at Fleming (the awful strangulation rendering is all me).  Also, I can’t remember if Fleming and TC were fighting or just talking in panel 4, but I sure like how it looked when I had them ‘brake’ the panel.

ALSO:  The 3rd issue of FALSE WITNESS: THE MICHELE BACHMANN STORY is available for purchase online.  It was written by BILL PRENDERGAST and features art from myself, DANIEL J OLSON, RYAN DOW and JAMES POWELL.  There’s also art from LUPI McGINTY, who did the kick-ass cover as well:

FINALLY:  Having ‘yellow’ be your only weakness will always be lame.

24 HOUR COMIC DAY is tomorrowSaturday October 3rd (to Sunday October 4th).  Locally(MPLS/STPL, MN) the event will be held at the MN CENTER FOR BOOK ARTS and begins at 10 AM.  All the details are HERE, and we’ll also be blogging throughout the day THERE as well.

ALSO:  FALSE WITNESS #2 is now for sale online and at some local comic retailers (Source, Big Brain). It will also be available at FALLCON (Oct 10th and 11th)!.  It is written and pencilled by BILL PRENDERGAST, and features inks/finishes/etc by myself, LUPI MCGINTY, DANIEL J OLSON, JAMES POWELL, and RYAN DOW.

Speaking of that project, the October/November issue of LAW IN POLITICS (MINNESOTA) is now out and features an illustration of MN’s own highly-flammable Rep. Michele Bachmann I drew in FALSE WITNESS: THE MICHELE BACHMANN STORY #1 cropped and colored(again by me) in their “TURKEYS OF THE YEAR” feature, in a section about Ms. Bachmann’s best quotes over the last year.  This issue of LAW AND POLITICS also kicks off the “TURKEYS…” features with a nice illustration by co-Conspirator KEN AVIDOR.  I don’t know if I have the right to post either of the images from the magazine here, so instead I’ll compromise with these:  First up a drawing Ken did of me in the battle of my life (from his LUTEFISK SUSHI ‘C’ contribution)…

And one he did recently of my wife and I…

Ok…see you at 24 HOUR COMIC DAY…I need to rest now.
