2: Countdown to C2E2

C2E2 begins Friday in Chicago, and I’ll be there mooching table space from co-Conspirator DANIEL J OLSON.  To prepare for this show there are few new projects I’ve been working on…

Here’s the new cover for MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #3, featuring the new streamlined look and KEVIN CANNON’s sweet logo.  The original issue 3 cover was pretty sweet (for a parody), and I thought it would be hard to top, but this one turned out to be perhaps my favorite new MANLY TALES cover.  You’ll be able to purchase it, the issue it encapsulates, and the 5 other issues of MANLY TALES (all with new covers) in one affordable package at C2E2.

ALSO:  This comic has technically been done and available for purchase online for several weeks now, but C2E2 marks the first time FALSE WINESS: THE MICHELE BACHMANN STORY #3 will be for sale to the public.  This issue is all about Michele’s love/hate relationship with gay Americans (ie: she loves to hate them).  It is written (as  always) by publisher BILL PRENDERGAST, and features art by LUPI McGINTY, JAMES POWELL, RYAN DOW and myself (and was edited/assembled by C2E2 table-mate DANIEL J OLSON).

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–issue three–pin-up–Maxeem

MANLY pin-up by Maxeem

MANLY pin-up by Maxeem

The back cover pin-up for issue three was by the one and only MAXEEM(http://maxeem.com/)!

Maxeem is a cartoonist and world citizen who has graduated from MCAD, worked for BIG TIME ATTIC(www.bigtimeattic.com/blog), put out some wonderful self-published work, travelled and lived pretty much everywhere, and most of all Maxeem has decided the computers did it(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZryf1sZBQc).

I first discovered Max’s work when he was self-publishing the title POOP MONKEY several years back. Nowadays he’s given it the classy title EX NOVO LIBRIS and you can read the whole damn thing(so far, and Max tells me the conclusion IS coming) at http://maxeem.com/comics/enl/.

   Thanks again Max!

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–issue three–pin-up–Bud Burgy

MANLY pin-up by Bud Burgy

MANLY pin-up by Bud Burgy

The first(of two) pin-ups from issue three comes from BUD BURGY(www.budburgy.wordpress.com).  Regular readers of my blog (Hi, Brian, Steve, Ryan, and Dan!)  will recognize Bud’s name as that it pops up weekly since every Monday on the link above Bud is updating a page to the CONTINUITY GUY graphic novella that he is illustrating and I wrote—and it’s Tuesday, so there’s  a new page up right now!!!  Bud is a big fan of the character Continuity Guy that I co-created back in 2001 with my old friend NELS(www.ceesick.livejournal.com), and in issue three Bud not only did the above pin-up, but he illustrated an 8-page story in which Continuity Guy meets up with Bud’s character MEATFIST AND GRONK. (Hmm…maybe I should post that sometime soon…)

Thanks again to Bud for all your great work on issue three and the current CONTINUITY GUY story.  If you’d like to help financially support the work Bud does, you can order one or more of the great MUSCLES AND FIGHTS anthologies Bud put out back in 2007-8.  These anthologies also feature comics by me, as well as some actually talented cartoonists doing great work.

MUSCLIER AND FIGHTIER: mysteriously missing…

MUSCLIEST AND FIGHTIEST: http://www.amazon.com/MUSCLES-FIGHTS-Burgy-Amado-Rodriguez/dp/B002AD80IE/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1248054999&sr=8-9

MUSCLES AND FRIGHTS: http://www.amazon.com/Muscles-Frights-Burgy-Amado-Rodriguez/dp/B002AD09WO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1248055178&sr=1-3

So, issue three was a great issue for me. Two fun stories to write, and one great guest artist. AND–another great pin-up for the back cover! But we’ll get that tomorrow…

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–issue three–pg 16(THE END!)

pg 16--THE END!

pg 16--THE END!

THE END, indeed!  As you can probably imagine, the over-all reaction to this story ending with Fleming not only having a child killed, but doing in her parents as well, didn’t sit quite right with some people.  Not that these actions aren’t in Flemings character, just more the very idea of such things is a bit off-putting for some.  I, however, was quite fine with it.

   The some things happened.

For one, I had originally planned for MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE to run for eight regular issues(and whatever one-shots I do during that time) and to be done in two years.  This was to be accomplished with a pretty final finale for Fleming.  But as I got to about this half-way point, I had thought up a lot of other stuff I wanted to do with the characters, and ending so soon wouldn’t allow for that. So instead of 8 issues I came up with a pretty good plan for 25 issues, and decided to run with that.

25 issues is, however, a lot of space to fill with only 3 lead characters(and even more so if one of them doesn’t even talk).  So taking a tip from Joss Whedon who says on an ANGEL commentary that life is a lot easier for a writer when you move from a 3 character show to an ensemble, I started hatching how to add more plausible members to the team(in others words, I don’t wanna force anyone on myself and the readers).  My first thought was to JOAN OF ARCHEOLOGY.  I think in addition to killing off a 10 year old, a lot of people were sad I did her in so quick cause she was such good foil for Fleming.  So with a little logical deduction I think I’ve figured out a pretty good and satisfying way to bring JOAN(and her parents) back into this MANLY world.  So look for their return….eventually.

In the meantime, stick with me.  I have some awesome stuff coming up while I continue on this greytoning hiatus, and will be back to some MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE real soon.

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–issue three–pg 14(of 16), also: Me at Zinefest…?

pg 14

pg 14

    …To Be Continued…

As promised I’m on the drawing horse currently.  Just finished my work on FALSE WITNESS issue 2(and remember, you can still buy issue 1 at www.biasedliberalmedia.com), and am now pencilling TOMMY CHICAGO #3(written by Brian Bastian, www.tommychicago.com). I’m drawing it at a smaller than usual size(about 7″x11″, I usually do 11″x17″) to get it done sooner, and it’s a fun and interesting challenge. So I hope to get thru that by the end of August(if not sooner) and then will pencil MANLY TALES #7 and  ink MANLY TALES #6(it’s already pencilled).  Yay, creativity!

***Also, SARAH MOREAN did a quasi wrap-up of ZINEFEST on THE DAILY CROSSHATCH, but really it’s more about tips on how to throw a good con(which from an exhibitors standpoint she knows how to do, no doubt). It’s a nice article with lots of great points, and if you squint REALLY HARD at the second picture you can kinda make me out behind Ryan Dow’s Buddha stand-up. http://thedailycrosshatch.com/2009/07/17/zinefest-the-only-good-party-i-ever-threw/#more-4182

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–issue three–pg 13(of 16)

pg 13

pg 13

   …To Be Continued…

I think I said all there is to say about the genesis of the puppets last post.  This time I will simply say:

   “Drawing puppets is fun.”

I should really figure out a way to bring them back.
