1: Countdown to C2E2–LIFT-OFF!!!!

C2E2 begins Friday in Chicago, and I’ll be there mooching table space from co-Conspirator DANIEL J OLSONtable C-11 to be precise.  Actually, by the time you read this I’ll be in a car with Dan, his wife/writing partner AJ, and my wife Nichole on our way there.  Please don’t rob our houses.

Here’s the new cover for MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #4, featuring the new streamlined look and KEVIN CANNON’s sweet logo.  You’ll be able to purchase it, the issue it encapsulates, and the 5 other issues of MANLY TALES (all with new covers) in one affordable package at C2E2.  In fact, for a full list of EVERYTHING Dan and I will be selling at C2E2, continue scrolling down.  But first…

WHAT’LL BE UP WITH STAPLEGENIUS.COM FOR THE NEXT WEEK OR SO:  My guess is that I won’t really be able to post much of anything while in Chicago, so I’ll most likely be maintaining blogio silence until we return.  Hopefully I’ll be back with a shite-ton of pictures I can caption-up with patented and much loved smarm as a wrap-up report of C2E2 sometime early-to-mid next week.  I’ll also be posting a new CAPTAIN CONFEDERACY cover next weekend.  I’ll be back in full force on the 26th as I begin posting MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #5, the Daily Goal Sketches, and whatever else crosses my path.  Until then: Crass commercialism!!!

WHAT’LL BE AVAILABLE FROM DAN AND I FOR YOU TO CONSUME AT C2E2:

** The aforementioned MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE 1-6 pack, and the MANLY TALES specials pack.  I’ll also bring a few other things with “just in case”….oh, unlikelihood….

** All three issues of Dan and AJ’s SUPER MAXI-PAD GIRL, including the ALL-NEW issue #3 which features a story written by me and drawn (as every story is) by Dan.  There will also be a new (and some old) SMPG buttons,  and the rarest of collector items–the hand-made SMPG dolls!!!

** The CONTINUITY GUY graphic novella by BUD BURGY (art) and myself (story).  And don’t forget, while technically table-less, Bud will be around and happy to sign a copy for you!

** FALSE WITNESS: THE MICHELE BACHMANN STORY–including the all-new issue #3.  Every issue is written by BILL PRENDERGAST, and features a ton of great art by LUPI McGINTY, JAMES POWELL, RYAN DOW, DANIEL J OLSON, and myself.

** SUPER FANTASTICA COMIX — Dan’s wonderful four-issue anthology series featuring art and stories by just about everyone I know, and few people I don’t.   Dan will also have some of his 24 Hour Day mini-comics on hand as well.

** BIG FUNNY — Last years collaborative project between the CARTOONIST CONSPIRACY, ALTERED ESTHETICS GALLERY, and about 45 wonderful cartoonists.  An old-fashioned, over-sized comic pages insert like those of yester-year is a STEAL at $5 and must-have collectors item.  Seriously…we really need to unload these…

** SKETCHES!!!  What would a con be without sketches?!  Dan and I will both be doing them.  The sizes will vary based on price, but rest assured while they will all be of the highest quality, they will be relatively dirt cheap.

**  And if there are any weird-o complete-ists out there I’ll be more than happy to sign your copies of TRANSFORMERS: BUMBLEBEE.  I doubt this will happen, but you never know…

I think that’s it…wish us luck…and if you’re in the Chicago area between Friday and Sunday, Dan and I  hope to see you at C2E2!  Just look for these smiling faces:

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #4–by Brian Bastian and myself–pg 24(of 24–THE END!!!), also: Ghost Rider, and Tomorrow is 2010

Issue 4 of MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE was drawn by myself, but written by BRIAN BASTIAN (whose characters from his book TOMMY CHICAGO are guest starring).  Now our thoughts on this, the final page:

BRIAN BASTIAN:  I could have been more clear about how TC get’s cured, but I think it’s pretty evident, so I guess there was no need to.

DANNO KLONOWSKI: Well…TC does come right and say it, so I think it’s pretty clear. I’d just like to say “Thank You” for about the eight millionth time for writing this issue, Brian (and EVERYTHING else we’ve done together since).  Our collaborations have wonderfully joyful to work on, and I look forward to finishing up the TOMMY CHICAGO saga (due out May 2010) and seeing where we go from there. And now… Brian’s “FINAL THOUGHT” on MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #4.

BRIAN BASTIAN:  I think we’ve proven that my memory is pretty unreliable when it comes to my writing, but one thing I remember quite clearly is the first time I saw this finished issue. I believe it was at Fallcon and I remember loving every page. Then I got to this last page and the gag with Stella wearing the fake mustache. It made me laugh and I thought it was a perfect end to the story. But I didn’t write it, I guess Danno had just added it in as he was drawing it. Now some people might get angry about an artist messing with their scripts, but I generally think that funny beats ego, and this was funny. So the next time I talked to Danno I made a point to compliment him on his addition to the story, telling him how awesome I thought it was. At which point Dannoyou looked at me like I was drunk and told me it was in the script. I believe him, because I’ve done the same thing to Bob (Lipski) countless times, but I really don’t remember writing that at all. So I just felt like a big jerk, going “Oh look how funny I am!”  But I got over it and we’ve done a lot of quality work since then.  Well, we’ve done a lot of work, anyway.

Ok…here goes 8000 and 1:  THANK YOU, BRIAN!!!  Fear not, Brian will be back before you know it with more commentary on some MANLY TALES work we did together.  Not only will be back, but once he’s here he won’t be going anywhere for a couple months.  So…take that however you will.

Finally, as you “fans of chronology”out there may realize, tomorrow is JANUARY 1st, 2010.  Other than it meaning we can finally put the horrible Bush-Era “Aughts” behind us once and for all and gear up for reals to live thru the horrible Obama(and Pawlenty Probably)-Era “Tens”, it also means something kinda special for me and STAPLEGENIUS.COM(ics) in general.  So after you sober up, be sure to stop back here sometime this weekend and see what that is.  Until then enjoy some Ghost Rider.  Thanks.

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #4–by Brian Bastian and myself–pg 23(of 24), also: Storm, and the Indy Comic Week In-store today!

Issue 4 of MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE was drawn by myself, but written by BRIAN BASTIAN (whose characters from his book TOMMY CHICAGO are guest starring).  Now our thoughts on this page:

BRIAN BASTIAN:  I never intended the characters to be friends at the end of the issue.

DANNO KLONOWSKI:  GOOD!  Cause if it WAS your intention you did a very bad job of setting that up.  Personally, I love how Fleming and TC hate each other instantly.

BASTIAN:  But a more subtle reason for the abruptness of the leaving (beside running out of pages) was that since it was our first time really working together, if the issue sucked there would be no reason story-wise for them to ever hang out again. And if our collaboration worked out (and I believe it has) It would be easy to come up with some random reason to throw them in the same room in the future. Or maybe they’d just magically get transported to a…Oh, uh..Spoiler Alert.

KLONOWSKI:  I believe what Brian is trying to say is he and I have worked out quite well as creators, our creations have worked out quite well as friendly antagonists, and that ‘Spoiler Alert’ will be “Spoiled” on this here website come February.

Speaking of spoiling…I was so thrilled with that THOR I did for the Daily Goal Sketch a week or so ago that when asked for STORM from the X-MEN I just decided to more or less redo the Thor.  It didn’t turn out as great.   It’s ok, but I gotta ask: “Storm, whats wrong with your hair?!?!”

It’s INDY COMIC WEEK!   THE SOURCE COMICS AND GAMES  is having an in-store signing/creator meet and greet TODAY from 5pm to 9pm.  I’ll be there, along with several fellow Conspirators and other local indy artists.  Stop on by, say hi, and buy any one of these new, local, and/or indy comics–and what an amazingly massive list it is!

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #4–by Brian Bastian and myself–pg 22(of 24), also: ‘Continuity Guy’, the Black Cat, and Indy Comic Week is tomorrow

Issue 4 of MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE was drawn by myself, but written by BRIAN BASTIAN (whose characters from his book TOMMY CHICAGO are guest starring).  Now our thoughts on this page:

BRIAN BASTIAN:  I think this is my attempt to build drama. On page 22……of a 24 page book.

DANNO KLONOWSKI:  Ah, don’t feel bad.  I usually don’t try at all to build drama.

BASTIAN:  And I love the panel of TC pulling on Britishworth’s mustache. He really is a great character to write. Considering that both villains were characters we each considered being done with, they really helped hold together the very basic plot. That sentence is proof that I always need a second draft. Some would say I need more than that.

KLONOWSKI:  Like I said before, you really gave me a love for Britishworth I never had before doing this issue.  Speaking of Britishworth and your writing style: I don’t know/remember if this was intentional or not, but I just now–two plus years later–realized that Britishworth starts the issue by extolling the virtues of whispering, and end it’s by doing his most dastardly deed VIA WHISPERING!  Genius!  That’s the kind of book-ending a story even a second or third draft can’t always tie together.

Hey, a couple new CONTINUITY GUY pages are up!  The end is near, so go check out BUD BURGY’s fine work today!

Also…Lookit!  The Daily Goal Sketch is back!  Today’s it’s Spidey’s non-red-headed love interest BLACK CAT (who is alive. Right? Or is she dead now too?  Stupid multi-decade continuity.  When will the Big Two ever learn?…)

Finally, it’s INDY COMIC WEEK!  What does that mean?  Well, it means there will be no publisher books released this week, so several comic shops around the country are asking indy cartoonists and self-publishers to be the suppliers of fresh comics this week.  Here in Minneapolis/St Paul uber-comic shop THE SOURCE COMICS AND GAMES is not only taking part, but also having a in-store signing/creator meet and greet WEDNESDAY (December 30th) from 5pm to 9pm.  I’ll be there, along with several fellow Conspirators and other local indy artists.  Stop on by, say hi, and buy some comics!

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #4–by Brian Bastian and myself–pg 21(of 24), also: Indy Comic Week

We’re in the home stretch!  Issue 4 of MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE was drawn by myself, but written by BRIAN BASTIAN (whose characters from his book TOMMY CHICAGO are guest starring).  Now our thoughts on this page:

BRIAN BASTIAN:   I love the panel of Jimmy screaming to the heavens that Atlantis Lad is dead. He’s so upset over someone he barely knows, but I suppose Sidekicks have a sacred bond that we non-sidekick types just can’t understand.

DANNO KLONOWSKI:  I love the fact there are nine panels on this page.  I’ve since gotten very used to it, but in our first collaboration here I remember thinking many times “HOW THE HELL AM I GOING TO GET THIS ALL ON ONE PAGE?!?!”  If I did this today I’d probably lay it out with at least 3 fewer panels, but the learning experience has been fun over these last two years.

BASTIAN:  Oh and, here, let me try this once…SPOILER ALERT! : This won’t be the last time I imply that Fleming eats the dead Atlantis Lad’s.

KLONOWSKI:  That is totally your bit.  It’s an angle of Fleming I don’t think I would have done.  Yes, I DID have him cook an Atlantis Lad in issue one, but I don’t think I’d have ever had Fleming eat that dish.  But having you write such things really helped lead MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE down a dark (but FUN!) path right quick.

BASTIAN:  I also worked really hard to get the previous line about bacon, just for this payoff right here.  Yep, that’s it.

It’s INDY COMIC WEEK!

WEEKEND PIN-UP: Kevin Cannon, also: Indy Comics Week

Wish I could have timed it so this pin-up by KEVIN CANNON was the Xmas post, cause really there is no finer gift than a drawing by Kevin of your character (such as this one which was the back cover for the print edition of MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #4).  Or a drawing of ANYTHING by Kevin for that matter.  When you see his name on a book–BUY IT!  You will never, ever be sorry.

Speaking of buying comics and being sorry, this Wednesday (December 30th) I and several of my fellow Conspirators will be taking part in INDY COMIC WEEK at the SOURCE COMICS AND GAMES.  Enjoy the official spiel below, and I hope to see you there!

 CELEBRATING THE SPIRIT OF INDEPENDENCE!

“Welcome the opportunity to feature some of our favorite aspects of the greater comic book community” said Dominic Postiglione, co-owner of the Source “Independent & Alternative comic book creators and cartoonists drive the diverse world of graphic literature right up to the bleeding edge of popular culture.” Postiglione continued “A graphic literaure blender that is constantly changing, evolving and delivering something new and enticing in who knows what format?”

A Mini Indy Comicon is especially appropiate given the regions rather strange history of being a geographical breeder reactor for comic book creators and cartoonists. The Source, a long time supporter of Independent & Alternative Creators, welcomes the opportunity to showcase a much valued and often underserved segment of the industry, that is a virtual creative nuclear reactor.

Look for 14-20 Independent & Alternative Creators to be in attendance at the Source Mini Indy Comicon. They will be doing sketch’s, discussing & promoting, their work and interfacing with the people in attendance! There will also be complimentary soda, snacks, and a very special prize drawing! The Source will also be featuring over 250 Independent & Alternative comic book titles and cartoons in various formats at the store during the week.

“This is a highly rarified gathering of very talented individuals!” Postiglione summarized “And we’re inviting the general public,  seasoned comic fans, new comers and anyone else who is interested in graphic literature, to attend this very special and free event!”

XXX

The only claim to fame Dominic Postiglione co-owner of the Eisner Spirit of Retailing Award winning Source Comics & Games make is “the comic book I like the least, I like more that the comic book you like the most!”

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #4–by Brian Bastian and myself–pg 20(of 24), also: Its some kind of holiday or something today I think. Who knows. I’m just glad to not be at work.

Issue 4 of MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE was drawn by myself, but written by BRIAN BASTIAN (whose characters from his book TOMMY CHICAGO are guest starring).  Now our thoughts on this page:

BRIAN BASTIAN:  Now we get the official payoff that he’s not a scientist. I like “World Class Fibber”.  It would look good on a business card.
DANNO KLONOWSKI:  Agreed.  Know what doesn’t look good (and no disrespect to Bob Lipski here)?  Stella’s hair.  Sweet, Surly Baby Jesus I hated drawing her hair.  Not the front swoosh, I like that.  But the back hair.  That’s what I get out of revisiting that exchange between Stella and Fleming–not the funny writing.  Not the great business card joke.  Just “You didn’t like drawing her hair and it shows, A-hole”.  So if you’ve ever wondered why Stella has her hair in a bun in TOMMY CHICAGO series 2 (and I know no one has), now you know.

BASTIAN:  And the death of Atlantis Lad. I think I’ve killed 4 Atlantis Lads (or 3, but I killed one twice), and this is the most random one, but I like it because you know he’s going to die, it’s just a matter of finding out how. “Hit by a car”. It’s not sexy, but it gets the job done.
KLONOWSKI:  I think it’s great!   I seem to recall you asking if you could have him shot and I put the kibosh on that cause I had already written a script that I did that in.  I think the car was much funnier.  And it brings us back outside.  The arrival and departure of Fleming and Co from Chilitown has nearly come full circle.
So…yeah…Happy Whatever You Do Or Do Not Celebrate During This Time Of The Year.  Hope the jolly fat man brought you some sweet shite!
