COUNTDOWN to…24 Hour Comic Day, Fallcon, and Continuity Guy–day 1(of 4)

24 HOUR COMIC BOOK DAY is THIS SATURDAY (October 3rd).  The website/blog for the MPLS/STPL 24 Hour Day event is HERE.  IF you are not in MN but still want to participate, go to the “MAIN” 24 Hour Comic Day site and see if there is an event near you.  Now onto the new stuff I’m getting ready for FALLCON (OCT 10th and 11th)…

"Guest Artist Spectacular" cover--public version

"Guest Artist Spectacular" cover--public version

God I love the PERFECTED Manly Tales of Cowardice logo by KEVIN CANNON!!!….so nice…anyway….

I am planning to have 3 new book available at Fallcon, and it should come as no shock that one of them will be a print collection of the MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE “GUEST ARTIST SPECTACULAR“.  The above cover image is for the “public” version of the book (standard mini-comic on Kinkos-quality paper).  There will also be a “creator” edition which’ll be slightly snazzier (color cover, better paper) and available only to those brave and wonderful 16 creators who took part.  Thanks again, everyone!

ALSO:  I guess we’re technically counting down to the end of the CONTINUITY GUY graphic novella, which my buddy BUD BURGY is doing an awesome job drawing .  It’s written by me and features characters co-created by myself and NELS.  Anyway, we’re at page 17 (of 45).  Only 28 more weeks to go until it’s done, with a fancy-schmancy print version available soon afterwards. Sweet!

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–Guest Artist Spectacular–pin-up–by Dean Fraser, and some words from Brian Bastian…

Fleming Hazmat pin-up by DEAN FRASER

Fleming Hazmat pin-up by DEAN FRASER

DEAN FRASER:   I honestly don’t know DEAN FRASER from Adam…or Adama for that matter (So Say We All!).  I was just looking for an image of DOC OCK to link to one day for a previous post and I found Dean’s “SPRINGFIELD”-ized versions of not only DOC, but a whole slew of characters from comics and pop culture.  And they are all entirely awesome.  In awe of his gift (I can’t draw Groening-esque for shite) I did the only thing I could think to do–I propositioned a total stranger (a CANADIAN, no less!) to draw me a Fleming Hazmat in that iconic style.  Dean, miraculously, agreed to.  And I cannot thank him more.  But I’ll try:  THANKS, DEAN!!!  You should thank him for me too by checking out his great site “SPRINGFIELD PUNX“.  You’ll love it!  Oh, and Dean…speaking of Adama…I think the BSG crew could use a good PUNXing…just throwing that out there…

And now that the GUEST ARTIST SPECTACULAR is nearly over (*sniff*),  my biographical punching-bag for the last 3 weeks, BRIAN BASTIAN, would like to say a few words to all the immensely talented artists who have graced this blog recently.  Brian…

“Hello there all you beautiful Staplegenius.com readers, I just wanted to say a few words now that the “12 Trials of Fleming Hazmat” has run it’s course, and what a ride it has been. Earlier this summer when Danno told me that he wanted to do a 14 page story with 14 different artists, I thought it was a great idea. He then told me that all the artists would be working on it at the same time, so each page would have to be self contained, while still telling a story, and I thought it was an interesting challenge. Then he told me he wanted me to write it, and I thought it was a horrible idea. But I said I would write it. Why? Because I’ll say yes to writing anything.

My inability to say no aside, the most interesting thing about the project to me was to see what those 14 artists did with their pages. My favorite thing about writing comics is the thrill of seeing the art, and I think we can all agree that in this case there was no disappointments. Every single page is a thing of beauty. There were pages I wasn’t totally sure about as I was writing them, but after seeing them here…well it makes me seem brilliant.

So a big thank you to everyone involved. I hope I’m able to work with all of you again in the future (and remember, I’ll say yes to writing anything!) And also thanks to Danno for allowing me to be a part of this. Hopefully you make this an annual event. Regardless of if I write it or not, I’ll be looking forward to it. And to all you readers out there, if you enjoyed this, I believe most if not all of the artists will be at Fallcon in a couple weeks. So after you buy your copy of Tommy Chicago #3, go check out their stuff. Actually you can go check out their stuff before you get your copy of TC #3, I’ll make sure to save you a copy.”   —BRIAN BASTIAN

Wonderfully shameless as always, Brian!  I going to be shilling TC#3 myself later this week as I begin the COUNTDOWN to 24 HOUR COMIC BOOK DAYFALLCON…and all sorts of other stuff.  So lots of sneak peeks and previews of what I’ve been working on lately.  This will culminate in next weekends 24 HOUR COMIC DAY(which I’ll begin posting my 24 Hour book here next Monday!).  But before we get too far ahead, today’s Spectacular Guest Artist DEAN FRASER actually submitted to me two versions of Fleming–the one above, and one of Fleming a blue version of his suit.  To me his suit has always been red, but Dean makes a strong argument for blue.  What do you guys think?

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–Guest Artist Spectacular–pg 14(of 14)–by Zander Cannon and Brian Bastian

pg 14--art: Zander Cannon, words: Brian Bastian

pg 14--art: Zander Cannon, words: Brian Bastian

BRIAN BASTIAN:  Will be giving you a piece of his mind on Mondays post.  For serious.

ZANDER CANNON:  Once upon a time 9 years ago I showed a very rough and crude mini-comic called STAPLEGENIUS (#2, I believe) to Zander Cannon and he laughed.  Not at it (though he should have), but with it.  This laugh inspired me greatly since I had been one of the eight fans of CHAINSAW VIGILANTE, the TICK spin-off Zander did.  Then, years later, Zander said to me on at least two seperate occasions that MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE is his favorite mini-comic.  Again…inspiring!  But this time not just cause of some silly, short-lived series he did in the early 90’s, but because of his later work on REPLACEMENT GOD, TOP TEN, SMAX, and his many science-based books he’s done with his studio-mate KEVIN CANNON like BONESHARPS, COWBOYS, AND THUNDERLIZARDS.  Also, he’s a Co-Conspiratorand friend who has faith–actual faith!–in my work.  Frankly, I couldn’t see any other way to end this GUEST ARTIST SPECTACULAR then with Zander, cause let’s be honest–this whole website and the comics contained herein are at least 28% his fault.

All that gushiness aside, the GUEST ARTIST SPECTACULAR doesn’t TECHNICALLY end here…  Come back Monday for the traditional MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE “end of the issue” PIN-UP!  I shall warn you here and now–it’s SPECTACULAR!!!  See you then.

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–Guest Artist Spectacular–pg 13(of 14)–by Bob Lipski and Brian Bastian

pg 13--art: Bob Lipski, words: Brian Bastian

pg 13--art: Bob Lipski, words: Brian Bastian

BRIAN BASTIAN:  just struck a child! QUICK! CALL THE POLICE!!!

BOB LIPSKI:  is crazy–CRAZY DEDICATED TO COMICS!  Bob created the comic UPTOWN GIRL one afternoon back in 2002 and didn’t stop doing a new 24 page issue of it every month until very shortly ago when he hit issue #75!!!  Counting the various UPTOWN GIRL specials, one-shots, and extended issues of the regular run he also did during that time, BOB surpassed over 2000 pages of UPTOWN GIRL.  He is now working on a several hundred page UPTOWN GIRL original graphic novel, which is written by Brian Bastain and due sometime in 2010.   Oh yeah, Bob also drew the first 12 issues of TOMMY CHICAGO  during that 7 year span, too (this is the same TOMMY CHICAGO I later took over art chores on after Bob found a spare weekend to procreate and get married).  That, my friends, is crazy dedicated to comics.

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–Guest Artist Spectacular–pg 12(of 14)–by Ryan Dow and Brian Bastian

pg 12--art: Ryan Dow, words: Brian Bastian

pg 12--art: Ryan Dow, words: Brian Bastian

   BRIAN BASTIAN— Has freedom hair.

RYAN DOW—  Ryan dow has won my heart–from his consistently solid art and story on his “INTROSPECTIVE COMICS” webcomic, to his introspective thoughts on comics during the ART AND STORY podcasts–my heart Ryan Dow has won.  Ryan is a well-loved fixture of the Mpls/Stpl Cells of the International Cartoonist Conspiracy, taking part in all the usual hoo-hah (like BIG FUNNY and MUSCLES AND FIGHTS), and doing his own great comics along the way (like PLUNGER-MAN, WEEKENDS WITH CARL, and JACK AND ZACK MAKE A COMIC).  He’s even part of the QUORUM OF TWELVE(or so) who are putting together LUTEFISK SUSHI “D”–a highlight of his contribution being the “LSD” podcast he is starting which will have interviewers with fellow QUORUMers and SUSHI “D” contributors (The first episode will be up soon and features some windbag).   You have my heart, Ryan.  Now hold me, you big hunky introspective cartoonist, you!  Hold me and make all the bad men go away.

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–Guest Artist Spectacular–pg 11(of 14)–by Dan Murphy and Brian Bastian

pg 11--art: Dan Murphy, words: Brian Bastian

pg 11--art: Dan Murphy, words: Brian Bastian

BRIAN BASTIAN–knows why the caged bird sings.  He also makes a mint off the blackmail money this kind of knowledge brings about.

DAN MURPHY–what more can I say about DAN MURPHY that I haven’t already?  I dunno…probably lots.  But I’ll instead just say that Dan and I will have a PHIL, THE  EVIL BEAN OF DOOM comic debuting at FALLCON.  This book will reprint the PHIL story we did 15 years ago (but in new-fangled, computerized GREYTONES!),  AND AND AND features an ALL-NEW follow-up tale set 15 years later!!!  And if the above page is any indication, you know it’s going to be fantastic.  Speaking of fantastic:  Heres something I pencilled and Dan inked about 17 years ago….

Yeah, you know you’re jealous of my keen grasp of anatomy at such an early age.

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–Guest Artist Spectacular–pg 10(of 14)–by Lupi McGinty and Brian Bastian

pg 10--art: Lupi McGinty, words: Brian Bastian

pg 10--art: Lupi McGinty, words: Brian Bastian

BRIAN BASTIAN—  Believes in a writing philosophy that states:  “Too many cooks spoil the broth.”  This is why he always works alone and never in the kitchen.

LUPI MCGINTY—  I met LUPI about a year and a half ago when she made her presence known to both the ALTERED ESTHETICS  gallery and the INTERNATIONAL CARTOONIST CONSPIRACY (Locals #612/#651) by contributing to the LUTEFISK SUSHI “C”show and box set.  Lupi continues to be an active Conspirator, even taking a chair on the “QUORUM OF TWELVE(or so)” who are organizing LUTEFISK SUSHI “D”.  Lupi does some cool comics you can see on her blog (like ANTI-GIRL),  concert posters, and is also a part of the art team for FALSE WITNESS: THE MICHELE BACHMANN STORYcomic series (issue #2 out soon!).  I would even say Lupi’s art is the best known “face” of the FALSE WITNESS series, considering it’s been seen by thousands not ONCE, but TWICE(!)in the CITY PAGES.  So basically, if Bachmann loses in 2010 Lupi’s days are numbered.  Sorry about that, Loops.  You’re a great talent and will be dearly missed.

Also: BUD BURGY and “CONTINUITY GUY” educates us all on the Blinovich Limitation Effect.  Enjoy!
