MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–issue one–pin-ups–Bob Lipski

by: Bob Lipski

by: Bob Lipski

When I was planning/working on the first issue of MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE I knew that I really wanted to include artists from the vast cartooning community we have here in Minneapolis/St Paul–many of whom I’m lucky enough to call friends, and almost all of whom I met through the International Cartoonist Conspiracy (www.cartoonistconspiracy.com).

My plan was to include in each issue pin-ups by local artists, and in some cases back-up features. BOB LIPSKI (www.uptowngirlcomic.com) came out blasting with BOTH for issue one.

The pin-up above was done during FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2007 at Jimmy Jam Comics(RIP) in Rochester, MN. Bob, myself, and a few other writers and artists were on hand to meet the fans(not of us, obviously) and do $1.oo sketches–with all the profits going to the Rochester Public Library to buy more comics. So, yes. I had to pay for Bob’s pin-up, but it was worth it.

I do however know for a fact Bob would have done the pin-up for free. How do I know this–cause Bob actually did the back-up stories for the first TWO issues of MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE.

The back-up story for issue one was a TOMMY CHICAGO tale by Bob and BRIAN BASTIAN (www.tommychicago.com), and goes towards explaining issue one’s cover ( https://staplegenius.wordpress.com/2009/05/18/manly-tales-of-cowardice-issue-one/mt1-cover-grey/)  …you know, in case you read the whole thing and thought: “Wait…wasn’t TOMMY CHICAGO supposed to be guest-starring?” which I know none of you did.  I specifically commissioned the TC tale since it was at the time my favorite mini-comic. My second favorite mini-comic was Bob’s UPTOWN GIRL, and he did one of those tales for issue two.

    Thanks again Bob (and Brian)!

THE END!!!    ….for now…  Issue one is up next in the official MANLY TALES chronology.

I am part of a group called the INTERNATIONAL CARTOONIST CONSPIRACY, and this weekend we will be having a “gallery show”, promoting our group, drawing, and selling our various comics during Northeast Minneapolis’ annual ART-A-WHIRL (www.nemaa.org).

The “gallery show” will be at DIAMONDS COFFEE SHOP in the THORPE BUILDING (http://www.diamondscoffeeshoppe.com/)  and we will be in the hallway BEHIND Diamonds doing the above mentioned drawing and selling.  We’ll be there Friday from 5-10pm, Saturday from 12-8pm, and Sunday from 12-5pm. Stop by and say “Hey” on your whirly tour of Minneapolis art.

      CONCLUDED TOMORROW!!!

I’m fortunate enough to be a Resident Artist at a gallery here in Minneapolis called ALTERED ESTHETICS (www.alteredesthetics.com), and a few times a year I have some work up in their various month-long shows.  And of all the drawings and paintings I have displayed there, none have ever sold faster than the original art for AUNY MAY #1 (pg.4).

Marvel appearantly is trying to get girls into comic nowadays with their PRIDE AND PREJUDICE adaptation and stuff like MARY JANE, but maybe they should shift their focus to the widowed retiree market and sign me to produce an actual AUNT MAY series. If the rush to purchase my original is any indication, I think it could be a huge hit for them.

    …just throwing that out there….

     To be continued…

What oh what did Atlantis Lad find?

The McGuffin!  That’s what!  (Too bad you’ll have to wait until next time to see it)

When I started planning MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE I wrote a page full of potential McGuffins and story titles, and oddly enough neither “Al Capone’s OTHER Vault” or this McGuffin were on that sheet.  The story I planned to do (which ended up in Super Fantastica Comix #1– http://www.superfantasticacomix.com) was literally knocked out of my head as I sat down to draw it, replaced by this story–practically written start to finish in a one second burst of inspiration.

…not to build up any unrealistic expectations…

I guess I’m just proud of how shampoo-simple this story explains who the characters are, how they act towards each other, and the world of  off-the-rack plots they inhabit–all with no over-thinking  on my part required.

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2007–cover and pg 1

 …To Be Continued….Bumm-Bumm-Buuummm!

So this is the first published MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE mini-comic (if you don’t count my 2006 24 Hour Comic Day attempt…which I don’t…Let’s never speak of it again).  It was made for and came out on 2007′s Free Comic Book Day, which I attended that year at the now-defunct Jimmy Jam Comics in Rochester, MN (and to find out what happened to Jimmy Jam’s check out: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2019194&id=1052919271 )

The MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE series was started twice and nearly aborted both times (when I get to issue one after this 8 page dandy, I’ll go into more detail) , but doing this mini for FREE COMIC BOOK DAY saved it.  With this mini, I finally nailed down a simplistic and iconic way of drawing Fleming and company in a way that  was eluding me in the previous two attempts.  After I finished the FREE COMIC BOOK DAY story I was able to go back and salvage the half-done issue one.
