The UPTOWN GIRL vs TOMMY CHICAGO vs MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE crossover from 2008 was written by BRIAN BASTIAN, pencilled (and inked) by BOB LIPSKI, and inked (and pencilled) by me. Brian and Bob are here to join me for some reflections on this project:
BASTIAN: I spent a lot of time trying to figure out who’s wishes got shown on this page. I think I gave another option or two, and let Bob and Danno sort it out, but these ones I think work great and don’t need a lot of space to explain, unlike everything else so far.
LIPSKI: Having no idea what Betsy Rossbot looked like when she was a human I left that entirely up to Danno. Danno did reveal her origin in ‘Manly Tales’ and it was really, really good.
DANK: Thanks Bob! Yep, when I was inking this I had already written MANLY TALES #5 (the Betsy Rossbot origin, and the next story to be posted on this here blog) and done some character sketches but this was my first time actually committing her look to paper. I’m pretty sure she looks very different in the final product of #5. Meh. Will find out in April, I guess… OH! And I’m pretty sure Rocketman wasn’t there in transformation sequence in Bob’s pencils. But one of the long-running gags in UPTOWN GIRL is that Ruby does a comic strip called ‘ROCKETMAN’ that Rocketman is blissfully unaware of. So I thought it would be funny to have Rocketman transform into Ruby’s character but be so in awe of what’s happening to Betsy he doesn’t even know he changed. Zing!
ALSO: In addition to being super excited for this August’s LUTEFISK SUSHI ‘D’ show, I’m also equally pumped for the first ever MIX–Minneapolis Indy Expo–show on AUGUST 21st at the SOAP FACTORY. Its being put on by ANDY KRUEGER and SARAH MOREAN and is likely to be the next APE or SPX or whathaveyou. Anyway, they’ll be taking applications for tables soon, but in the meantime check out the great animated opener on their website. See if you can’t spot an animated Dank!
ALSO ALSO: DAMN! It’s the second to last page of CONTINUITY GUY!!! Guess what…the book is off to the printer, and will debut in one month at the opening of ALTERED ESTHETICS “RESIDENT ARTISTS 4” show (April 2nd, from 7 to 10pm). More details in the coming days…
FINALLY: Today’s Daily Goal Sketch character was always my favorite Spider-Man villain. I hope when they make the next awful Spider-Man movie they get around to using him (instead of re-doing the Green Goblin or something). So here his is, THE SCORPION:
