COUNTDOWN to…24 HOUR COMIC DAY, FALLCON, FALSE WITNESS #2 and LAW IN POLITICS–day 4 (of 4)

24 HOUR COMIC DAY is tomorrowSaturday October 3rd (to Sunday October 4th).  Locally(MPLS/STPL, MN) the event will be held at the MN CENTER FOR BOOK ARTS and begins at 10 AM.  All the details are HERE, and we’ll also be blogging throughout the day THERE as well.

FALSE WITNESS #2 -- NOW AVAILABLE!!!

FALSE WITNESS #2 -- NOW AVAILABLE!!!

ALSO:  FALSE WITNESS #2 is now for sale online and at some local comic retailers (Source, Big Brain). It will also be available at FALLCON (Oct 10th and 11th)!.  It is written and pencilled by BILL PRENDERGAST, and features inks/finishes/etc by myself, LUPI MCGINTY, DANIEL J OLSON, JAMES POWELL, and RYAN DOW.

Speaking of that project, the October/November issue of LAW IN POLITICS (MINNESOTA) is now out and features an illustration of MN’s own highly-flammable Rep. Michele Bachmann I drew in FALSE WITNESS: THE MICHELE BACHMANN STORY #1 cropped and colored(again by me) in their “TURKEYS OF THE YEAR” feature, in a section about Ms. Bachmann’s best quotes over the last year.  This issue of LAW AND POLITICS also kicks off the “TURKEYS…” features with a nice illustration by co-Conspirator KEN AVIDOR.  I don’t know if I have the right to post either of the images from the magazine here, so instead I’ll compromise with these:  First up a drawing Ken did of me in the battle of my life (from his LUTEFISK SUSHI ‘C’ contribution)…

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–Guest Artist Spectacular–pg 10(of 14)–by Lupi McGinty and Brian Bastian

pg 10--art: Lupi McGinty, words: Brian Bastian

pg 10--art: Lupi McGinty, words: Brian Bastian

BRIAN BASTIAN–  Believes in a writing philosophy that states:  ”Too many cooks spoil the broth.”  This is why he always works alone and never in the kitchen.

LUPI MCGINTY–  I met LUPI about a year and a half ago when she made her presence known to both the ALTERED ESTHETICS  gallery and the INTERNATIONAL CARTOONIST CONSPIRACY (Locals #612/#651) by contributing to the LUTEFISK SUSHI “C”show and box set.  Lupi continues to be an active Conspirator, even taking a chair on the “QUORUM OF TWELVE(or so)” who are organizing LUTEFISK SUSHI “D”.  Lupi does some cool comics you can see on her blog (like ANTI-GIRL),  concert posters, and is also a part of the art team for FALSE WITNESS: THE MICHELE BACHMANN STORYcomic series (issue #2 out soon!).  I would even say Lupi’s art is the best known “face” of the FALSE WITNESS series, considering it’s been seen by thousands not ONCE, but TWICE(!)in the CITY PAGES.  So basically, if Bachmann loses in 2010 Lupi’s days are numbered.  Sorry about that, Loops.  You’re a great talent and will be dearly missed.

Also: BUD BURGY and “CONTINUITY GUY” educates us all on the Blinovich Limitation Effect.  Enjoy!

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–Guest Artist Spectacular–pg 7(of 14)–by Daniel J Olson and Brian Bastian

pg 7--art: Daniel J Olson, words: Brian Bastian

pg 7--art: Daniel J Olson, words: Brian Bastian

BRIAN BASTIAN– was killed last night by enemy fire while imbedded with the Fightin’ 84th just outside of Baghdad, where he was busy writing the script for a comedy version of  Joe Sacco-stlye war reporting  comics.

DANIEL J OLSON– Daniel J Olson and I are NOT the same person!  Despite the “Parent Trap” style antics we get into all the time–which ARE admittedly  fun–we are frankly dumbfounded at the constant confusion.  I do this website.  Dan does www.bewilderedkid.com/blog.   This is my webcomic,  SHENANIGANS  is Dan’s.  I do stuff like the Guest Artist Spectacular, Dan does stuff like SUPER FANTASTICA COMIX.  I do TOMMY CHICAGO with a writer BRIAN BASTIAN, Dan works on SUPER MAXI-PAD GIRL with a writer who is also his wife (Hi, AJ!).  I have done work for MUSCLES AND FIGHTS, BIG FUNNY, LUTEFISK SUSHI and FALSE WITNESS: THE MICHELE BACHMANN STORY (Issue #2 out soon!), Dan has…uhh…also done that.  I have done a 24 Hour Comic Day Logo Image for the Minneapolis/St Paul 24 Hour Day Event, Dan…oh…he did this years, didn’t he?  WAIT!  This one is difference, for sure: I live in Northeast Minneapolis, and Dan calls St Paul hom–what?….REALLY?!…No way!  That’s like 9 blocks away!  AWESOME!  We should totally get Bud and Ryan to live over here now!……………………..ok, so we’re the same guy.

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–issue three–pg 14(of 16), also: Me at Zinefest…?

pg 14

pg 14

    …To Be Continued…

As promised I’m on the drawing horse currently.  Just finished my work on FALSE WITNESS issue 2(and remember, you can still buy issue 1 at www.biasedliberalmedia.com), and am now pencilling TOMMY CHICAGO #3(written by Brian Bastian, www.tommychicago.com). I’m drawing it at a smaller than usual size(about 7″x11″, I usually do 11″x17″) to get it done sooner, and it’s a fun and interesting challenge. So I hope to get thru that by the end of August(if not sooner) and then will pencil MANLY TALES #7 and  ink MANLY TALES #6(it’s already pencilled).  Yay, creativity!

***Also, SARAH MOREAN did a quasi wrap-up of ZINEFEST on THE DAILY CROSSHATCH, but really it’s more about tips on how to throw a good con(which from an exhibitors standpoint she knows how to do, no doubt). It’s a nice article with lots of great points, and if you squint REALLY HARD at the second picture you can kinda make me out behind Ryan Dow’s Buddha stand-up. http://thedailycrosshatch.com/2009/07/17/zinefest-the-only-good-party-i-ever-threw/#more-4182

MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE–issue three–pg 9(of 16), also: ‘zinefest’ jam and recap

pg 9

pg 9

   …To Be Continued…

There she is–JOAN OF ARCHEOLOGY! A year or so before creating MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE, I had come up with Joan.  I had originally based Joan on my stepdaughter’s 7 to 10 year old idea of what an archaeologist is(Indiana Jones), and thought she would make a great lead character for a comic or young readers series.  I even at one point did a few pages of a first issue where Joan was to match wits with an elder and dastardly archaeologist over the ancient treasure known as THE BUDDHA SQUIRREL!  This however was at the tail-end of my “BY THE SEAT OF YOUR PANTS” comics-making approach and philosophy–basically, I’d come up with an idea, mull it over for awhile until a story was basically formed, and instead of writing a script I’d just dive right page-by-page and hope it all came together by the end.  Often times this way of going about making my comics worked out well enough, but this is one of those times where a few pages in I hit a brick wall and called it quits until I figured out where to go next.

I never figured out where to go next.

Instead I did a couple other things “PANTS” style, and by the end of the last one I realized I NEEDED to start writing scripts.  Long form stories and series’ were never going to work out the way I wanted them to unless I had a much more concrete idea of what I was doing and where I was going before I ever started drawing panel one of page one.  And so, 24 HOUR and jam comics aside, I have yet to look back on this decision and am happier for it.

So some time after that I started MANLY TALES, and one of my first ideas was to bring back the dorment JOAN as that I thought she’d make a great foil for Fleming.  I then quickly realized that giving Fleming a 10-year-old nemesis was a great pretext with which to flashback to his own childhood and help explain his casual disregard for life, especially if that life was the life of a child(Atlantis Lad). And so with those factors in mind, issue three was born. Why didn’t I reuse the BUDDHA SQUIRREL here as well? I dunno. I think its that subconscious “LAST CRUSADE” residue I mentioned on the post for page one.  But fear not, for the BUDDHA SQUIRREL does make his way into the MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE pages….you’ll just have to wait until issue five.

****ZINEFEST 2009 RECAP:

zinefest

This very special ZINEFEST jam was done by myself, RYAN DOW (www.introspectivecomics.com), DANIEL J OLSON (http://www.bewilderedkid.com/blog/) and MIKE TOFT (http://www.cartoonistconspiracy.com/brainfood/).

Ryan also did a pretty great ZINEFEST themed comic you can read at: http://ryandow.com/ic/2009/07/12/what-not-to-say/comment-page-1/#comment-4280

   So, yeah…ZINEFEST….

I had such high hopes for ZINEFEST. I guess I figured a 2-day celebration of zines and indy comics (which was pretty well attended) would be a lot more….financially worthwhile.  Not to poo-poo the work SARAH MOREAN(http://www.smorean.com) is doing in organizing ZINEFEST, because she has really made ZINEFEST great (believe me, I did ZINEFEST its first year back in 2004 and vowed to never do it again, but Sarah has really turned it around and its become so well known and attended by both fans and vendors  that it’ll probably be moving into a bigger space next year), its just people seemed to treat it more as a place to go and see stuff, not so much with the buying.  As Ryan points out on the link above, there was a strangely high amount of people who would walk up, READ AN ENTIRE COMIC which they seemed to enjoy, put it down and either walk away in silence, or say “I’ll be back to buy something” and then…ya know…never come back.

I wonder if the problem is systemic–a depressive economy and all that.  It certainly couldn’t be because my stuff sucks….right?

Either way, I’m really glad I’m posting my work online now.  At least I know people are reading it every day.  If I had spent all this weekend at ZINEFEST and come home to an internet-less world, I would be crushed and probably give up making comics for many months.  Instead, I’m going to go back to work–on FALSE WITNESS #2, TOMMY CHICAGO #3, MANLY TALES OF COWARDICE #’s 6 and 7, and the couple new projects me and some of my co-Conspirators came up with this weekend–and plowing ahead content in the knowledge that even though I do this to scratch my own itch, at least someone somewhere is having their itch scratched virtually as well.

Not that it was all bad…There were some fantastic highlights, like the 6 year-old boy who really wanted his mom to buy him one of Dan’s SUPER MAXI-PAD GIRL dolls(http://www.bewilderedkid.com/store/), seeing Ryan’s adrenaline ker-splode after his open-mike reading of JACK AND ZACK MAKE A COMIC(http://thejackandzack.blogspot.com/), the great sales for FALSE WITNESS(www.biasedliberalmedia.com), all the great trades, and all the great Conspirators who came out to support us and the indy comic/zine scene(Thanks all. You know who you are, and you ROCK!).  And most importantly, if it wasn’t for ZINEFEST I would never have come up with a great idea for my City Pages submission(http://www.cartoonistconspiracy.com/conspire/?p=1499) which, if all goes according to plan, will never, ever see the light of day(as far as the actual CITY PAGES goes. It’ll be posted here though when the CITY PAGES “Comix Issue” come out next month).

Now onto FALLCON!!!! (…kill me please….)
